Scouting Report

  • Hansen's fastball has historically topped out in the high 90s, and he consistently hit the mid-90s. In 2008, he's been sitting more around 92 mph. He also possesses an excellent high-80s slider, which has been somewhat of a mystery -- sometimes its absolutely dominant and other times it just isn't there. A fierce competitor who has struggled with adversity early in his professional career. Seems to have the tools to be a successful major league closer, just needs to work on his confidence and composure on the mound. Struggles with getting behind early in counts. When he gets first pitch strikes, he can be dominant. Had surgery in December 2007 to correct sleep apnea. All in all, if Hansen can get his slider going on a regular basis, he is an MLB-caliber reliever. ~ SoxProspects.com

Amateur Career

Had a 1.68 ERA in 31 games during his junior year at St. John's. Struck out 85 batters in 64 innings. Held opposing batters to a .173 average. 2005 First Team All-American, and Big East Pitcher of the Year.

In the summer of 2004, Hansen pitched for the Harwich Mariners in the Cape Cod League. Hansen posted a record of 1-1 with 10 saves while not allowing an earned run in 22 1/3 innings. During that season, he also struck out 41, walked 2, and gave up only 9 hits. His stint on the Cape opened some eyes to his talent and he left as Basball America's #3 ranked prospect from the league.

Minor League Career

Hansen was rated as the tenth-best prospect for the 2005 Draft by Baseball America. His expected bonus demands caused several teams to pass on him, so he fell to the Sox with the 26th pick. Signed with Boston on July 27, 2005, receiving a $1,325,000 bonus, and a four-year major league deal valued at $2,675,000 (for a total $4 million value).

Major League Career

Traded to Pittsburgh with Brandon Moss in a three way deal that sent Manny Ramirez and cash considerations to Los Angeles, with Los Angeles sending Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris to Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh sending Jason Bay to Boston.
