Overall Career

Covelli "Coco" Crisp was drafted by the Cardinals in 1999. He played centerfield in their farm system until 2002 when he was then traded to the Cleveland Indians for Chuck Finley. Once in Cleveland he was moved to left field to make room for rising star Grady Sizemore. Crisp showed decent improvements every year in most categories. In 2005 for Cleveland he batted .300 with 16 home runs and 69 RBIs while stealing 15 bases, being caught 6 times. He was aquired by the Sox in the 2006 offseason in the complicated trade that sent uberprospect Andy Marte, Guillermo Mota, Kelly Shoppach, Randy Newsom (PTBNL), and cash to Cleveland for Crisp, Josh Bard, and David Riske.

Crisp had a strong debut with the Sox and signed a 3 year $15.5 million dollar extension. He then suffered a broken left index finger which held him on the DL from April 12, to May 28th, 2006. He has sucked ever since, prompting SoSH to pose the question: How Long a Leash Should Coco Get?

Crisp's Moments in the Sun

  • June 29, 2006: In an interleague game against the Mets, with the Red Sox up by one in the eighth-inning, Coco robs David Wright of a game-tying extra base hit with a spectacular, soaring catch to preserve Curt Schilling's 10th win of the season. "The catch" came after Crisp had given Boston the lead in the bottom of the seventh, reaching on a bunt single, stealing second and eventually scoring on a shallow sac-fly to left.
  • April 20, 2007: With the Red Sox down 6-4 to the New York Yankees, Coco came up huge with a clutch eighth-inning game tying triple off Mariano Rivera. He would later score the game winning run on Alex Cora's blooper, capping a remarkable five-run inning.

Awards

  • St. Louis Cardinals Minor League Player of the Year in 2001
  • Named A.L. Player of the Week for the week of September 6-12 after hitting .571 (16-for-28) with 3 homers and 7 RBI in 2005

Trivia
