Stadium History

Then known as the Colt .45s, the Houston Astros spent just three seasons in Colt Stadium. The small park was exposed to Texas heat and humidity, and it was often overtaken by mosquitos. For seating, it featured an uncovered grandstand stretching between the foul poles and small bleacher sections in left and right field. The park was abandoned after the completion of the Astrodome aside from occasional uses by the Astros for exercise, though the players had to be wary of rattlesnakes on the field. Colt Stadium was taken apart and moved to Gómez Palacio, Durango, Mexico to serve as a park for a Mexican League team. Its former site was paved over to add more parking for the Astrodome.

Trivia

  • The National League lifted a ban on Sunday night games so that fans would not have to sit in Houston's heat to watch baseball.
  • Players would sometimes lose 10 to 15 pounds during a homestand from playing in the heat.
  • Insect repellent was sold at the concession stands.
