Scouting Report
- Jones had a lot of injury problems in college and thus slipped in the draft. Low 90s fastball tops out at 94 mph. Also throws a 12-6 curveball which sits in the high 70s, and a good circle change. Strikeout pitcher with very good control. He has shown a lot of success at the lower levels, but not on a consistent enough basis. Converted to a reliever in 2007, Jones has shown a solid ability to work under pressure situations in late innings. Fares well against both lefties and righties. Considering his repertoire and his splits, Jones is a strong candidate to become an effective reliever at high levels. However, he still should see time in the rotation in 2008. ~ SoxProspects
Amateur Career
Playing college ball at Indiana State, Chris Jones had a checkered career due to arm woes. He had a solid freshman year, making 3 starts and 8 relief appearances for a 3.20 ERA, showing dominant strikeout ability and mediocre control. As a sophomore Jones made only four appearances in an injury-marred year in which he was plagued by shoulder instability. In 2005, Jones made a comeback with four strong appearances, showing the same skill set he displayed as a freshman. However, he was slowed by a ruptured plantar plate in his right foot and had surgery in April. He made only 19 appearances his entire college career. Always regarded as a good arm when healthy, the Red Sox took a risk on his shoulder, drafting him in the 29th round in the draft that summer.
Minor League Career
Jones made a brief stop in the GCL to start his professioanl career, but quickly moved up to Lowell after less than two innings. Pitching exclusively in the bullpen, Jones put up very good numbers, especially an improved walk rate. After remaining in extended spring training to start 2006, Jones moved into the Greenville rotation where he was extremely impressive to start the season, including two starts in which he allowed no hits. Like all of Greenville's starters, he was limited to 5-6 inning stints. However, in June, Jones turned in several shaky starts in a row and then landed on the disabled list.
