Scouting Report

  • Extremely intelligent, Carter is a real student of hitting, and has demonstrated success with the bat at every level. Excellent power with the potential for more. Hits for average and consistently gets on base at a very good clip. Hits lefties and righties well. Below average speed. In the field, Carter has spent much of his career at 1B but also has seen some significant time in left. He has always been know as well below average fielder, but he focused on his glove and footwork in 2007 and has improved slightly. Arm is not strong enough to play right. ~ Soxprospects.com
  • Carter was a highly touted high school player who went to top college program Stanford and never got to play. He fell all the way to the 17th round of the '04 draft and Scouting Director Mike Rizzo took a flyer on a kid who obviously had power but A) couldn't play defense and B) couldn't hit left handed pitching. The jury is still out on the defense, though the Diamondbacks were incredibly impressed with his improvement at both first base and left field during the offseason. As for hitting lefties, he has destroyed them, and righties too, and was the standout surprise of spring training, hitting .433 with three homers and 13 RBI in just 30 at bats this spring. He vaulted from Short Season A Yakima to Triple-A Tucson in just two years, and does not appear to be satisfied. ~ FutureBacks.com

Amateur Career

Played for Stanford University, totaled 24 HR in three seasons there to go along with 76 RBI.
