Overall Career
Charles Sylvester Stahl was born on January 10, 1873 in Avilla, Indiana. Stahl was 24 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 19, 1897 with the Boston Beaneaters. Stahl played 10 major league seasons as an outfielder. He batted .358 as a rookie for the Braves in 1897 and topped .300 five of his first six seasons. In 1304 games, Stahl finished with a .305 average, 36 home runs and 622 RBI.
In 1906 Stahl became the Red Sox player-manager when best friend, Jimmy Collins, decided to concentrate solely on playing. But the stress of managing quickly took its toll on him, and prior to the 1907 season, he committed suicide by drinking four ounces of carbolic acid. His suicide note read: "Boys, I just couldn't help it. You drove me to it." Stahl's widow, Julia, was mysteriously found dead in the doorway of a Boston tenement house one year later.
