Overall Career

Charles Edward Johnson Jr. (born July 20, 1971 in Fort Pierce, FL), is a four-time Gold Glove award winning catcher who was briefly a member of the Red Sox. Johnson was acquired along with Chris Narveson in a March 31, 2005 trade with the Colorado Rockies in exchange for Byung-Hyun Kim. Johnson was immediately designated for assignment and released, marking one of the shortest tenures in Red Sox history.

At the time, Johnson was to be paid $9 million and Kim $6 million. The Red Sox, willing to pay $5.685 million of Kim's contract, received $3.315 million in cash considerations to cover the full $9 million cost of releasing Johnson (which the Rockies would have had to pay either way). The Red Sox reportedly received a tax break as a result of receiving this cash.

Johnson signed with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on April 4, but then took a personal leave of absence on April 6. He was released in June, ending his major league career.
