Overall Career
Carmen Fanzone made his first major league appearance in the field for the Boston Red Sox as a defensive replacement for 3B Rico Petrocelli in the 8th inning of a game at Fenway Park against the California Angels on July 22, 1970. He made two errors. In one play. Against the first batter of the inning.
By the time his Red Sox career ended at the close of the 1970 season, Fanzone had committed four errors in five games in the field, while recording just eight assists.
Trivia
After his short stint with the Red Sox in 1970, Fanzone went on to an unremarkable 4-year career as a utility player with the Chicago Cubs, and a more remarkable post-baseball career as a jazz trumpeter of some renown. He was perhaps best known to Cub fans for the numerous occasions when, as an active player, he performed the national anthem prior to games at Wrigley Field.
