George Joseph "Candy" LaChance was born on February 14, 1870, in Putnam, CT. LaChance was 23 years old when he broke into the big leagues on August 15, 1893, with Brooklyn.
LaChance had an 12-year career as primarily a 1st baseman. His finished his career after 1263 games with a .280 average, 39 HR, and 690 RBI.

- Although he had a sweet name, he had a sour disposition. "A bull-like man who prided himself on his strength, LaChance belied his nickname. . . He once challenged Rube Waddell to a wrestling match before a game. After an hour, Waddell pinned him, then went out and pitched a shutout while LaChance recuperated on the bench."[1]
