Buddy Bailey

Welby Sheldon "Buddy" Bailey was born on March 28, 1957 in Madison Heights, Virginia. Bailey would become known in Red Sox circles as two-time manager of the Pawtucket Red Sox.

Career

After retiring from minor league baseball, he began a coaching career at the urging of Joe Torre. He started managing in the Atlanta Braves organization in 1983. He would go on to win 5 division titles in the next 8 years, and managed players such as Tom Glavine and David Justice before moving on to the Red Sox organization after the 1990 season.

Bailey managed the Lynchburg Red Sox in 1991 and 1992, and led his teams to the Carolina League finals in each season. In 1993, he was named manager of the Pawtucket club replacing Rico Petrocelli. His clubs would win the division in each of his first two seasons, and was the International League Manager of the Year in 1996. Bailey would serve in other capacities from 1997-2001, including bench coach under Jimy Williams with the 2000 Red Sox. After returning to the bench in 2002 with Pawtucket, he led the team to The Governor's Cup in 2003. Bailey would also be awarded his second Manager of the Year award in 2003. He was hired under the Dan Duquette regime, and was let go after the 2004 season for 'philosophical differences' by Ben Cherington, Red Sox Director of Player Development Ben Cherington under Theo Epstein.

Trivia

  • Bailey would manage more games for Pawtucket (996) than any other manager in franchise history, and along with Joe Morgan, is one of only two managers to win 500 games.
