Scouting
An interesting prospect, Cox has an electric arm, but had a pedestrian career at Rice until a change in his windup in May of his senior year resulted in him harnessing his raw stuff.
"Cox struggled mightily with his control before the coaching staff decided to adjust his delivery. Through trial and error Cox shortened his arm action, and after bullpen sessions and an intrasquad outing, he showcased his new approach against LSU on May 16." [1]
Until the change, Cox was unable to throw consistent strikes, but with the change he increased both his command and his velocity (up to 97 MPH.) Has a wicked slider that sits in the high 80's. ESPN's Harold Reynolds called him the most dominant pitcher at the College World Series.
Amateur Career
Played two years for Rice University, after two years of junior college at Paris JC. Finished his senior year with a 3.48 ERA, with a 5-1 record and 62 Ks in 51.2 IP, while walking 25. However, his season can be broken down into two parts: pre- and post-mechanics change. Before the change he walked 22 batters in 26 innings, allowing 19 earned runs (7.77 ERA). Supernomario posted the following stats documenting Cox's results since the mechanics change:

Was drafted after his junior season by the Anaheim Angels in the 13th round of the 2005 draft. Made only 17 appearances and 18 innings as a junior, with a 3.86 ERA. Struck out 24 in those 18 innings, but also walked 14. Returned to his senior season. Was drafted by the Red Sox with their third round pick of the 2006 Amateur Draft. Was not rated by Baseball America among its 200 best prospect for the 2006 Draft.
