Overall Career
Brian Shouse is a left-handed pitcher who uses a three-quarters delivery to throw a low-80s fastball, sinker, slider and changeup. After spending his first 12 years mostly in the minor leagues, Shouse has been a lefty specialist for Texas (2003-2006) and Milwaukee (2006).
Brian was drafted in the 13th round of the 1990 amateur draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, and had a rocky debut in 1990, compiling a 5.22 ERA with 50 hits allowed in 39 2/3 innings. During the following two years, however, Shouse dominated hitters in A and AA, and on July 31, 1993 he was promoted to the majors. While in Pittsburgh, Brian pitched only 4 innings, allowing 7 hits, 2 walks, and 4 earned runs. That would be his only appearance in the majors until 1998 (with the Red Sox).
Shouse pitched three more years in the Pirates' organization before being released on May 16, 1996. He was immediately signed by the Orioles, but never made the majors during his time in that organization. Upon becoming a free agent in October 1997, Brian signed with the Red Sox. He spent part of 1998 pitching in AAA Pawtucket, but did appear in 7 games with Boston, pitching 8 innings and allowing 9 hits, 2 walks, and 4 earned runs. Perhaps underwhelmed by his performance, the Red Sox released Shouse on June 25, 1998.
Brian spent the next 4 years touring baseball's minor league system by signing with the Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Mets, Baltimore Orioles (again), Houston Astros, and Kansas City Royals. He finally got another chance to pitch in the majors with Kansas City in 2002, pitching 14 2/3 innings in 23 games and allowing 15 hits, 9 walks, and 10 earned runs. He was released on June 27th, 2002, and accepted a return engagement to Houston's AAA club (New Orleans).
Finally, Shouse found a home with the Texas Rangers after signing with them on December 3, 2002, pitching a combined 158 2/3 innings as a lefty specialist from 2003-2005 and compiling a 3.57 ERA with 109 strikeouts. In 2006, he was traded to Milwaukee, where he has continued to post solid numbers (30 innings pitched, 2.40 ERA, 16 strikeouts) and even picked up two saves.
