Boston Somersets
From SoSH
Also called the Boston Americans to differentiate the new American League Boston team with the older National League Boston team called the Boston Nationals. 1901 was the year the American League formalized with the Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Athletics, Boston Somersets, Washington Nationals, Cleveland Blues, Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers, and Chicago White Stockings. The name Somersets was derived from owner Charles W. Somers's name and was an invention of the Boston press. The nicknames of Puritans, Somersets, and Pilgrims were only used by the press and not the team or fans.
