The original nickname of the Boston Red Sox franchise in 1901. The name was used to differentiate the Boston American League team from the Boston National League team called the Boston Nationals. The nickname Americans was used until 1907 when the team was officially named the Boston Red Sox. The Americans were also called Boston Somersets in 1901 and 1902, Boston Pilgrims in 1903 and 1904, and Boston Puritans in 1905 and 1906; these names were used by the boston press and none stuck with the team or its fans until the team was called the Red Sox.
