Avila's Moments in the Sun

  • June 20, 1951: Avila sets a Cleveland Indians franchise record with 15 total bases in a game against the Boston Red Sox. Avila hits three home runs going 5-for-6. The record stands until surpassed by Rocky Colavito in 1959.
  • July 22, 1959: In his first game with the Milwaukee Braves, Avila hits a walk off 2-run home run in the 9th inning, off of Jim O'Toole, to help give the Braves a 5-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds. [1]

Trivia

  • In 1954 Avila led the AL in Batting Average, despite a strong season by Ted Williams. Though Avila hit .341 and Williams batted .345, Williams had fewer than the required number of at bats or plate appearances to qualify for the Batting Average title.
  • In 1952, he led the AL with 11 triples.
  • In 1954 and again in 1955, Avila led the AL in sacrifice hits with 19 and 18 respectively.
