Overall Career
Bob "The Steamer" Stanley (born November 10, 1954 in Portland, ME), was a right-handed relief pitcher who played only for the Red Sox from 1977-89. Bob was a first-round pick of the Boston Red Sox in 1974.
A sinker ball specialist, Stanley is the Red Sox all-time saves leader with 132. He is also the all-time leader in appearances with 637 and has been a member of the Red Sox Hall of Fame since 2000. His best season came in 1983 when he led the Sox with 33 saves and posted a 2.45 ERA.
Stanley was a key member of the 1986 Red Sox team that came within one out of winning the World Series but ultimately fell to the Mets in seven games. In the tenth inning of Game Six, Stanley's two-out wild pitch to Mookie Wilson allowed the Mets to tie the score.

Trivia
- Stanley officially announced his retirement on September 25, 1989 foregoing a $1 million guaranteed 1990 contract.
- Currently the Pitching Coach for the Connecticut Defenders, AA Affiliate of the San Francisco Giants
- Late in his career, Bob's grade school aged son was diagnosed with life threatening cancer. Bob's somewhat premature retirement was in part prompted by this diagnosis. His son was successfully treated by Doctors at Dana Farber and went on to graduate from Providence College. Bob was an active and committed supporter of the Jimmy Fund/Dana Farber his entire career and remains so to this day.
