Overall Career
William Andrew Pertica, a good spitball thrower, broke in with the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League in 1918. After the PCL shut down in July, he signed with the Red Sox. Pertica's best season was in 1921, with the Cardinals. His ERA of 3.37 was 10th best and he was 4th in the league with only 9.16 Hits Allowed/9IP.

Moments in the Sun
Pertica made his major league debut -- and his only appearance in a Red Sox uniform -- at age 19 on August 7, 1918. He pitched three innings against the Tigers in Detroit, allowing three hits and one run. Boston lost the game 11-8.
