Overall Career
Butland pitched only one full season in the Major Leagues. After a cup of coffee with the Red Sox in 1940, Butland pitched very well in the 1942 season both as a starter and as a reliever, allowing only 118 baserunners in 111.3 IP while compiling a 2.51 ERA.
Butland enlisted in the army during the winter of 1942 and was deployed overseas for World War II at which point his Major League career was effectively ended.
