Austin Bailey (born October 10, 1988 in Prattville, AL), was selected by the Boston Red Sox with the 504th pick (Round 16) in the 2007 Amateur Draft. Rated by Baseball America as the 176th best prospect for the draft, he fell because of his commitment to Alabama. Impressed the Sox during the 2008 spring training, receiving a strong promotion to Greenville.

Scouting Report

  • Bailey is a decent-sized RHP with an athletic frame. His repertoire includes a low 90s fastball with some movement, and a low 80s sharp slider. Has the ability to add velocity. Changeup is around 82 mph but is just starting to develop. Aggressive pitching style. ~ SoxProspects.com
  • Austin Bailey is a 2007 RHP 1B from Prattville HS, residing in Prattville, AL, with a 6'1" 195 lb. frame. Ranked #35 among PG National Top 100 pitchers. Body - strong, athletic, wide shoulder, plus frame. Pitching - high 3/4 slot, long clean arm action, quick arm, loose, good rhythm, easy and fluid delivery, over the head wind-up, FB has good late life, CB has good spin, hold a little longer, showed CU, very good arm. Offense - switch-hitter, LH - legitimate two-way prospect, can hit, slightly closed, ball jumps off bat, quick bat, spins off bat, has carry power, RH - good balance, good hands, can hit from both sides, good power from both sides.   • There are some interesting parts there, with two promising pitches in a fastball that has been clocked as high as 94 mph and a curve that at times has shown above-average potential. Amateur Career

  • Bailey was rated 36th by Baseball America’s Top 300 High School prospects. He was also rated No. 44 by Perfect Game Showcase’s Top 200 High School players. He played this summer for the East Cobb Braves. Bailey has attended the 2006 Perfect Game National Showcase, 2006 East Cobb Professional Showcase and the 2006 World Wood Bat Association (WWBA) 18-and-under National Championship.

Minor League Career

  • 2008: In his first minor league start on April 7th, he threw 4.2 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs, striking out three, and walking one. Unfortunately, he tore his shoulder labrum on his final pitch, seriously imperiling his professional career.
