History with the Red Sox

The Red Sox moved their A Ball affiliate from the Mid-West Leagues Michigan Battle Cats to Augusta in 1999, and the marriage was immediately succesful on the field, as the team had a second half revival, going 40-30 in the second half to lead the Greenjackets to the Playoffs. In the Playoffs, the team defeated Columbus, Hickory and Cape Fear to win the South Atlantic League Championship. It was the first championship a Red Sox affiliate had won since 1984 (Pawtucket), and the first in Single-A since 1979.

The team had two more winning seasons in 2000 and 2001, before falling below .500 in 2002 and having a horrible 2003. The team rebounded to a 66-73 record in 2004, but it was their last season in Augusta. They would sign a Player Development Contract with the Capital City Bombers... who would move to Greenville in 2005 and play as the Greenville Bombers. Augusta would welcome the San Francisco Giants to town... and in 2005 was bought by Cal Ripken Jr.
