Overall Career

Sanchez was signed by the Red Sox as a nondrafted free agent in 2001. He spent his first professional season with the Venezuelan Summer League Red Sox, winning the organization's Latin Pitcher of the Year. After the season, he had surgery to re-route a nerve in his elbow, and missed the 2003 season. He came back in 2004 with the NY-Penn League Lowell Spinners, posting a 1.77 ERA in 15 games, with 101 Ks in 70 innings. He dominated in 2005, moving quickly from A ball Wilmington (2.40 ERA and 95 Ks in 78 innings) to Double-A Portland (3.44 ERA in 50 innings).

After the 2005 season, the Red Sox traded Sanchez, along with Jesus Delgado, Harvey Garcia, and highly touted prospect Hanley Ramirez to the Florida Marlins for Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell, and Guillermo Mota. In 2006, Sanchez made his major league debut at Yankee Stadium, where he allowed 7 hits and no runs in 5 2/3 innings. His bullpen closed out a 5-0 Marlins win for the first Yankee shutout of the season. He finished his impressive rookie campaign with a 10-3 record and 2.83 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 114.1 innings.

Sanchez appeared in only six games for the Marlins in 2007, posting a 2-1 record with a 4.80 ERA before undergoing season ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder on June 21.
