Andy Manuel Marte , a top prospect since signing with the Atlanta Braves as an international free agent in 2000, never played a game for the Boston Red Sox organization. He was traded from the Braves to the Red Sox, for Edgar Renteria and cash, on December 8, 2005. The power-hitting third baseman was named the Sox' best prospect by Baseball America, but when Johnny Damon's departure via free agency left a hole in center field for the Sox, Marte's tenure with Boston ended abruptly. He was traded, along with Guillermo Mota, Kelly Shoppach, a player to be named and cash to the Cleveland Indians, for Coco Crisp, David Riske and Josh Bard, in a deal finalized on January 27, 2006.
