Overall Career
McDill debuted in the big leagues with the Kansas City Royals on May 15, 1997 at Kauffman Stadium against the Detroit Tigers. In his inning and a third in relief of Kevin Appier, McDill was knocked around, surrendering two walks and two hits, including a three-run homer to Tigers 1B Tony Clark; he struck out one. Nevertheless, the Royals rallied to score one in the bottom of the eighth and three in the bottom of the ninth (homers by Johnny Damon and Mike Sweeney) to win 10-9.
He saw his most sustained action and greatest success with the 2001 Red Sox - though unfortunately that's using both terms rather loosely. With the '01 Sox, McDill pitched 14 2/3 innings in 15 games, surrendering 13 hits, 7 walks and 9 earned runs (5.52 ERA). On the upside, he struck out 16.
On his career, McDill finished with a 7.79 ERA and a 1.615 WHIP in 34 2/3 innings. He did not record a decision in the majors.
McDill's Moments in the Sun
- McDill's best outing in a Boston uniform came on August 28, 2001 at Jacobs Field in relief of David Cone and the immortal Todd Erdos. McDill went two scoreless, no-hit innings, walking one and striking out two. The Sox lost the game 8-3.
- As a Tiger, he pitched 2 2/3 perfect innings against St. Louis on June 11, 2000. He struck out four in Detroit's 7-3 loss.
Trivia
- McDill wore #46 with the Red Sox.
