Alfred "Shoddy" Shaw was born on October 3, 1874, in Burslem, England. Shaw was 26 years old when he broke into the big leagues on June 8, 1901, with the Detroit Tigers.
Shaw had a 4-year career as a catcher. In his only season with the Sox, he served as a backup to Lou Criger. He appeared in 73 games and hit .192 with no home runs and 7 RBI. In 181 career games, he finished with a .200 average, 1 HR and 32 RBI.
