Aaron Helmer Sele (born June 25, 1970 in Golden Valley, Minnesota) pitched for the Boston Red Sox from 1993-1997. Sele was originally drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 37th Round of the 1988 amateur draft, but he chose to attend Washington State University. The Boston Red Sox selected Sele in the first-round (23rd overall) of the 1991 draft.

Overall Career

Sele was 22 years old when he broke into the big leagues on June 23, 1993 with the Boston Red Sox. As a rookie starter, he won his first four decisions, and started the season with a 6-0 record. He was eventually dealt with Bill Haselman to the Texas Rangers in November 1997 for Jim Leyritz and Damon Buford.

Besides Boston ('93-'97) and Texas ('98-'99), Sele has played for the Seattle Mariners ('00-'01, 2005), Anaheim Angels ('02-'04), Los Angeles Dodgers (2006) and New York Mets (2007-Present). He bats and throws right handed.

  • Sele was member of Team USA in summer of 1990, pitching a three-hit shutout vs. Cuban National team
  • Won his first six decisions as a Red Sox, the most recent player to do so.
  • Became the 81st player in Major League history to play for both the Dodgers and Angels.
  • In 2001, Sele drilled then Red Sox second baseman Chris Stynes in the face with a pitch, fracturing his left cheekbone.
