Overview

The 2007 World Series featured the American League Champion Boston Red Sox (96-66) versus the National League Champion Colorado Rockies (90-73). The Red Sox advanced after defeating the Cleveland Indians in 7 games in the 2007 American League Championship Series. The Rockies swept the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League Championship Series to improve to a perfect 7-0 in the postseason. The Red Sox won the Series in four games, sweeping the Rockies to collect their second World Series championship in four seasons.

Boston batters kept up their torrid pace and starter Josh Beckett was at his playoff best, lifting the Red Sox in Game 1. Dustin Pedroia led off the first inning with a homer and the Red Sox ripped eight doubles to send Colorado to its first loss since September 28th.

Game 2: October 25, 2007 at Fenway Park

The Red Sox showed they can win without a double-digit scoring effort as Curt Schilling recorded his 11th career playoff win and Mike Lowell hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the fifth inning to boost Boston to a 2-0 series lead.

Game 3: October 27, 2007 at Coors Field

Good things came in twos for the Red Sox as they moved to within one victory of their second championship in four years. Jacoby Ellsbury matched a World Series record with two doubles in a six-run third inning as Boston jumped ahead. After the Rockies closed the gap to one run, Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia cemented the win with back-to-back two-baggers in the eighth.

There was certainly no 86-year wait this time. The Red Sox used two homers and superb pitching to complete a sweep and propel once-title-starved Boston to its second World Series title in four seasons.

Trivia

  • All games for the 2007 World Series were broadcast on FOX, with expert analysis and deep thoughts by Tim McCarver. Joe Buck basically was there to back him up.
  • During game 1 of the series the Red Sox tied World Series records for doubles (eight) and extra-base hits (nine).
  • Buck and McCarver forgot about Game 4 when it was announced that Alex Rodriguez opted out of his contract with the New York Yankees during the game, and as a result almost missed the endgame and the celebrations that followed.
  • Hideki Okajima became the first Japanese pitcher to appear in a World Series game.
  • Daisuke Matsuzaka became the first Japanese pitcher to start and win a World Series game.
  • The Red Sox' sweep was the 20th in World Series history.
