Season Summary
The Murphy's Law of Baseball Seasons: Everything that could go wrong after the All-Star Break, went wrong.
Remarkable Moments
- April 5, 2006: Jonathan Papelbon is brought in to close and saves a 2-1 game vs. the Texas Rangers
- April 17, 2006: Mark Loretta walk-off homerun against the Mariners on Patriot's Day
- May 1, 2006: First Yankees game of the year, Doug Mirabelli goes from San Diego to Boston to arrive just in time for the game to catch Wakefield.
- May 11, 2006: Hell freezes over as Willie Harris is the first Red Sox player this year to get a hit off of Mariano Rivera. Red Sox win 5-3 on game winning 2-run single from Mark Loretta.
- June 11, 2006: David Ortiz, with the Sox down 2-4 in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, hits a 3-run walk-off against the Rangers' closer Akinori Otsuka.
- June 24, 2006: David Ortiz hits a two-run walk-off bomb to center in the bottom of the 10th against the Phillies, and a familiar foe, closer Tom Gordon.
- June 26, 2006: David Ortiz singles in Mark Loretta in the bottom of the 12th to beat the Phillies for the Red Sox' ninth straight victory.
- June 28, 2006: Sweep the Mets, set AL record for error-less games in a row, incredible catch by Coco
- June 30, 2006: Set Major League Record with 17th consecutive errorless game in 5-2 loss to the Marlins
- July 18-19, 2006: Back-to-back 1-0 wins over the Kansas City Royals.
- July 29, 2006: David Ortiz singles in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th to beat the Angels.
- July 31, 2006: Another David Ortiz walkoff, a three-run HR in the bottom of the ninth, this time against the Indians' Fausto Carmona. Fans at Fenway really rattled Carmona this night.
- August 2, 2006: After the first 2 Sox are retired in the bottom of the 9th, 2 hit batters, a walk, and a double off the Green Monster by Mark Loretta give the Sox another walk-off win against poor Fausto Carmona.
- August 19, 2006: Sox defeated by the Yankees 11-14 in a game that lasted 4 hours and 45 minutes, a new MLB record for a nine-inning game. This was also the second game of a day-night doubleheader.
- September 4, 2006: Recently acquired Carlos Pena, a native of Haverhill, Mass., hits a walkoff homerun off of Chicago White Sox pitcher Brandon McCarthy in the 10th inning for a 3-2 win over Chicago.
- September 21, 2006: David Ortiz breaks the Red Sox single season HR record set by Jimmie Foxx in 1938 with his 51st homerun in the 1st inning off Johan Santana.
