2004 Pawtucket Red Sox Season Ending Report

  • Record: 73-71 .507 (3rd in International League North Division)
  • Manager: Buddy Bailey
  • Playoffs: Did not Qualify
  • Attendance: 647,081

How did we do?

The Pawsox finished with a record of 73-71. They were tied for second in the Northern Division (with Rochester) and finished 4 games out of playoff contention (via the Wild Card). In and of itself, that is OK... but they were well under .500 at the All-Star Break. A true jeckle and hide team.

Players

First... a note:

AAA is about 4 types of players. For Pawtucket, at least for most of the year, it was really about 1 type of player, AAAA players. Which isn't too unexpected. After all, the upper reaches of the Sox system has very few prospects... and the type of team the Red Sox had this year had, at least in theory, a lot of potential for injury. However, the dismissal of manager Buddy Bailey at the end of the season may indicate a change in player type next season. We shall see.

Second, a note of caution...

I haven't seen these players much. I don't trust my few viewings are worth much against the weight of the statistical record. I will only base my opinions solely on the stats provided.

Offensive Player of the Year:
Adam Hyzdu

I already hear the cries... What about Earl Snyder? He broke many records. How can he not be the PoY. You Red Sox toadie!

I could make a very compelling case for Snyder. After all, he broke the team record for Total Bases, Extra Base Hits, RBI and tied the record for HRs.

But, Adam was a more complete offensive player. He finished with a higher Average, higher OBP AND Higher Slugging than Earl. Thus... he gets my award.

Adam finished the season with a line of .301/.413/.568 (leading the team in all categories) with 33 doubles (2nd on team), 29 HRs (2nd on team), 2 triples, 84 walks (led team), 7 HBPs (led team) while striking out 106 times. He led the team with 92 runs scored, was second on the team in hits and Total Bases, and was third on the team in RBI. He finished the year 8/12 in SB attempts.

Pitcher of the Year: Vacant

I wracked my brain on this choice. And, then, I realized I was not the Red Sox. I did not have to pick a player. I could abstain.

And, this is what I choose to do. I can't find it in myself to award this award to the Least Worst pitcher on the Pawtucket Roster. It says a lot about the Pawtucket pitching that there was no one who truly deserved this award.

OK... How about the rest?

That's a fair enough question. I'll split this up into various categories.

The Mainstays

Offensive Players
  • Brian Daubach: Brian played in 93 games for the Pawsox (with some time off to go to Boston), going .271/.400/.527 with 23 doubles, 21 HRs, 71 walks and 93 strikeouts.
  • Andy Dominique: The Catcher/1Bman/DH played in 111 games for the Pawsox while earning a trip up to the Majors just after the Brawl (where he got his first Major League Hit). Unfortunately, 4 games prior to the end of the season, the Red Sox designated him for assignment. Andy went .267/.360/.442 with 28 doubles, 15 HRs and 55 walks. He struck out 87 times.
  • Carlos Febles: The former Royals second baseman, Carlos played in only 68 games due to injuries. Carlos went .257/.319/.356 with 11 doubles, 3 triples and 3 HRs. Febles walked 20 times, struck out 42 times and went 13/15 in SB attempts.
  • Jeremy Owens: Jeremy is known as a great defensive wizard, something which is shown by his 2 errors in 104 games in the outfield. Offensively, he is a strikeout machine, striking out 140 times in 112 games. Jeremy does have some power (16 doubles, 12 HRs) and some patience (47 walks)... but doesn't hit a lot. His final line: .228/.303/.383.
  • Tony Schrager: Tony was the primary second baseman for the Pawsox (although he also played SS and 3B), going .266/.341/.436 in 122 games. Tony had 29 doubles and 15 HRs, walking 47 times while striking out 88 times.
  • Justin Sherrod: Justin played in 104 games for the Pawsox, mostly as a corner Outfielder. Justin went .267/.323/.504 with 20 doubles, 5 triples and 17 HRs. Justin walked only 25 times while striking out 108 times. He was 6/8 in SB attempts.
  • Kelly Shoppach: One of the only real prospects to play for the Pawsox this year, Kelly played 113 games, 101 of those behind the plate. His year was enough to earn him a spot on the International League Post-Season All-Star team (along with Hyzdu and Snyder). However, this honor may say more about the lack of catchers in the International League than it does about Kelly. Kelly was a lot like Schrager, power and strikeouts. Unlike Tony, Kelly does walk a bit. Kelly's final line was .233/.320/.461 with 25 doubles, 22 HRs (21 as a catcher, breaking the old Pawtucket record for HRs by a catcher), 46 walks and 138 strikeouts.
  • Earl Snyder: Earl Snyder hits for a lot of power. He was also a good soldier, starting the year playing 1B and OF... then becoming the primary 3B when Youkilis went to the majors. Late in the season, he played a couple of games at SS... and also earned himself a short promotion to Boston. After the season, he was designated for assignment in order to make room on the 40-man roster. Earl led the team in HRs (a team record tieing 36), doubles (43), Extra Base Hits (a team record 90), Total Bases (a team record 300) and RBI (a team record 104). In 136 games, Earl walked 35 times and struck out 128 times. Final Numbers: .273/.323/.558.
Pitching
  • Edwin Almonte: Almonte pitched in 51 games (72 innings) for the Pawsox. Which is pretty amazing considering his numbers. Edwin finished the year at 5-6 with 7 saves and a 5.50 ErA. Almonte gave up 89 hits (15 HRs), walked 22 and struck out only 37.
  • Jamie Brown: Brown pitched in 23 games, starting 20 and pitching 127 innings, finishing the year with a record of 4-6 and a 4.82 ERA. Brown has some interesting peripherals, giving up 128 hits (but 21 HRs), only 17 walks while striking out 92.
  • Scott Cassidy: Scott pitched in 28 games (16 relief appearances, 12 starts - 80 2/3 innings) and was probably the best pitcher on the Sox staff. Cassidy ended the year with a record of 5-3 with a save and a 3.46 ERA. Cassidy gave up 72 hits (10 HRs... HRs were the Achille's heel of the Pawsox Pitching staff), walking 38 and striking out 72.
  • Frank Castillo: The Lt. pitched in 27 games (25 starts, 168 1/3 innings) for the Pawsox. Castillo did have a brief stay in the bullpen for the Sox early in the year... but then became a staple of the Pawsox rotation. Frank ended the season with a 10-9 record and a 4.38 ERA. Frank gave up 169 hits (28 HRs), walked 34 and struck out 123.
  • Matt Duff: A late arrival for the Sox, Matt was a stabalizing force in the Pen. Duff-man pitched in 53 games (73 1/3 innings), finishing the season with a 7-4 record with 7 saves and a 3.93 ERA. Matt gave up 72 hits (only 3 HRs), walked 36 (and hit 6) while striking out 68.
  • Tim Kester: Tim earned a spot to the AAA All-Star game and was also named the Red Sox Pitcher of the Year for Pawtucket. Tim had an interesting year, having a very good early and late season... and a fairly miserable stretch during the middle of the season. Tim ended the season with a 12-11 record with a 4.20 ERA. Tim pitched a team high 169 1/3 innings, giving up 186 hits (25 HRs), walking only 19 (and hitting 9) while striking out 76.
  • Byung-Hyun Kim: Kim had a lost year, bursting his way to 60 2/3 innings (in 22 appearances), finishing the year at 2-6 with a 5.34 ERA. Kim gave up 71 hits (6 HRs), walked 12 (and hit 6) while striking out 39.
  • Anastacio Martinez: In between his stint for the parent club, AMart pitched in 38 games and 67 1/3 innings, going 3-3 with a save and a 3.74 ERA. AMart gave up 73 hits (5 HRs), walked 31 and struck out 57.
  • John Stephens: Stephens went 9-6 with a 4.47 ERA in 24 games (143 innings) for the Pawsox. John missed most of August in order to go to Greece and help the Australians win the Silver Medal. Stephens gave up 148 hits (23 HRs), walked 32 (hitting 10) and striking out 101.

Short Termers

Offensive Players
  • Jimmy Alvarez: Alvarez played in 31 games for the Pawsox, going .218/.273/.366 with 6 doubles, 3 triples, 8 walks and 20 strikeouts.
  • Jeff Bailey: The catcher got into 3 games while Andy Dominique was on the ML roster. Jeff went .300/.462/.400 with a double, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.
  • Trace Coquillette: The Utility man played in 62 games while missing time due to a number of injuries. Trace went .249/.329/.365 with 12 doubles and 3 HRs. Coquillette walked 17 times, was hit 7 times and struck out 54 times. Trace also pitched 2 innings (in 2 different games), giving up 5 hits (1 HR), 2 runs, 1 walk and striking out one.
  • Cesar Crespo: Cesar spent the first half of the year as the utility infielder for the Red Sox... a time many wish to forget. The second half of the year showed the promise that was never shown in the Majors... in 55 games, Cesar went .271/.333/.412 with 13 doubles, 3 triples and 4 HRs. Cesar walked 21 times, struck out 53 times and went 10/12 in SB attempts.
  • Joe Kilburg: Joe played in 4 games, going 0/4 with a walk and 3 strikeouts.
  • George Lombard: George played in 55 games in the second half of the season, going .276/.371/.396 with 8 doubles, 3 triples, 3 HRs and 20 walks. George was hit 9 times, struck out 33 times and went 16/19 in SB attempts.
  • Jesus Medrano: Jesus played in 13 games, going .235/.289/.471 with a double, a HR, 2 triples, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.
  • Kevin Youkilis: Kevin started the year in Pawtucket before getting the ML call due to Bill Mueller's injury. He later had a second shorter stint after the All-Star Break before Mark Bellhorn's injury put Kevin back to the Majors. Kevin had a completely bizarre first 32 games, going absolutely crazy at home while hitting terribly on the road. His second stint was all on the road, and seemed to indicate that the first stint was a fluke. Kevin ended the year with a line of .266/.350/.403 with 12 doubles and 3 HRs. Kevin walked 19 times, struck out 28 times and went a perfect 2/2 in SB attempts.
Pitching
  • Ryan Cameron: Ryan appeared in 10 games from the pen for the Pawsox, accruing 16 innings of work. Cameron went 0-1 with a 3.94 ERA, giving up 17 hits (2 HRs), walking 14 and striking out 20.
  • Bo Donaldson: Bo played in 1 game, pitching 2 innings, giving up a hit, a walk and striking out 3.
  • Tim Hamulack: One of the multitude of Left-handed relief pitchers Theo brought in, Tim pitched in 35 games (29 2/3 innings) before being demoted to Portland. Tim ended the year with a 7-4 record with 2 saves and a 6.98 ERA. Tim gave up 44 hits (4 HRs), walked 19 and struck out 25.
  • Bryan Hebson: Bryan pitched in 7 games for the Pawsox, but missed most of the season due to injury. Hebson threw 11 innings, went 1-0 with a 5.73 ERA. Hebson gave up 13 hits (2 HRs), 4 walks and struck out 9.
  • James Johnson: Johnson bounced between Portland and Pawtucket a couple of times, getting into 16 games and pitching 24 innings for the Pawsox. James went 0-2 with a 4.13 ERA, giving up 28 hits (4 HRs), walking 13 and striking out 17.
  • Mark Malaska: The Lefty bounced between the parent club and Pawtucket, getting into 33 games (36 1/3 innings) for the Pawsox. He finished the year with a 1-1 record with 1 save and a 4.21 ERA. Mark gave up 42 hits (7 HRs), 11 walks and struck out 31.
  • Joe Nelson: Joe and his "vulcan" pitch was with the Pawsox for 16 games. Nelson pitched 21 1/3 innings, giving up 27 hits (1 HR), 9 walks and striking out 31.
  • Brandon Puffer: Puffer was acquired midseason from the Padres and solidified the back-end of the pen down the stretch. Puffer pitched in 24 games (going 30 1/3 innings), finishing with a record of 3-2 with 10 saves and a 3.26 ERA. Puffer allowed 31 hits (1 HR), walked 11 (3 Intentional) and struck out 21.
  • Phil Seibel: Seibel went 1-2 with a 3.02 ERA in 8 appearances (7 starts) for the Pawsox. In 44 2/3 innings, Phil gave up 42 hits (7 HRs), walked 12 and struck out 31.
  • Josh Stevens: Not to be confused with John Stephens, Josh pitched 5 games (going 1-0 with a 5.00 ERA) before being demoted to Portland. In 27 innings, Josh gave up 45 hits (5 HRs), walking 4 and striking out 11.

The Departed

Offensive Players
  • Raul Casanova: Raul played in 23 games for the Pawsox, going .270/.353/.365 with 2 doubles, a triple, a HR and 10 walks. Casanova struck out 15 times. Raul was traded to the Royals organization midway thru the year.
  • Mike Curry: Mike played in 50 games during the beginning of the year, going .262/.359/.293 in 50 games before earning his release. Mike hit 5 doubles, walked 24 times and struck out 43 times. Curry was 12/16 in SB attempts.
  • Henri Stanley: Henri played in 51 games prior to being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Dave Roberts. Henri went .299/.383/.470 with 17 doubles, 1 triple and 3 HRs. Stanley walked 23 times and struck out 27 times.
Pitching
  • Jimmy Anderson: Jimmy pitched in one game for the Pawsox after getting demoted from the Red Sox and prior to getting traded BACK to the Chicago Cubs. Anderson pitched 1 2/3 innings, giving up 1 hit, 1 walk, 1 run and striking out one.
  • Matt Beech: I could have sworn Matt was here longer than 4 games. But... the record indicates I am wrong. Matt was signed out of the independent league to give the Pawsox another starter after a rash of injuries... but after 16 innings, Matt himself joined the Injured List. Matt was released after a couple of low-minor rehab appearances in August. Matt finished the year at 1-1 with an 8.44 ERA, allowing 26 hits (5 HRs), 18 runs (15 earned), walking 9 and striking out 10.
  • Ed Yarnall: Ed started 2 games (6 1/3 innings) before being traded to the Phillies. Yarnall finished his Red Sox career by giving up 7 hits (1 HR), 3 runs, walking 2 and striking out 4.

The Rehabbers

Offensive Players
  • Mark Bellhorn: Mark rehabbed for 2 games, going .167/.167/.333 with a double and 2 strikeouts.
  • Ellis Burks: Ellis got into one game before going back into extended rehab for his knees. Ellis went 0/2 with a walk.
  • Nomar Garciaparra: I'll keep him in the Rehab group... even though he is departed for different pastures. Nomar played in 6 games for the Pawsox, going .238/.273/.429 with a double, a HR, a walk and 3 strikeouts.
  • Dave McCarty: Dave played in 3 games for the Pawsox, going 2/7 with 4 walks, a HBP and 2 strikeouts.
  • Bill Mueller: Bill played in 4 games, going 4/13 with 2 doubles and 2 walks.
  • Trot Nixon: Trot played in 6 rehab games for Pawtucket, going 7/21 with a double and 2 walks. Trot struck out 3 times.
Pitchers
  • Pedro Astacio: Pedro pitched in 2 games, accumulating 9 1/3 innings. Astacio gave up 9 hits (1 HR), 4 runs (3 earned), 1 walk and struck out 7.
  • Lenny DiNardo: Lenny had one appearance in Pawtucket, throwing 3 innings, giving up 3 hits and striking out 4.
  • Curt Leskanic: Curt pitched in 1 game for the Pawsox, going 1 perfect inning.
  • Ramiro Mendoza: Mendoza pitched in 6 games (8 2/3 innings) for the Pawsox, going 0-1 with a 4.15 ERA. Ramiro gave up 13 hits (2 HRs) and struck out 3.
  • Brad Thomas: Thomas pitched in 4 rehab games for the Pawsox... and then went back on the injury shelf for the remainder of the year. in 4 1/3 innings, Brad gave up 6 hits, 9 runs (5 earned), 6 walks and struck out one.
  • Scott Williamson: Scott pitched in 4 rehab appearances, pitching 3 2/3 innings, allowing 3 hits, 5 runs and 6 walks, hitting one and striking out 6.
