2004 Lowell Spinners Season Ending Report
Final Record: 32-44
How did we do?
By record, not particularly well. The Spinners finished with a record of 32-44, finishing last in the Stedler Division.
Players
First, a note of caution...
I haven't seen these players. I have no idea how they look. I can only base my opinions solely on the stats provided.
Offensive Player of the Year:
Matt Van Der Bosch
The 9th Round Pick of this years draft, the Oral Roberts Centerfielder showed a dimension often lacking in Red Sox prospects, speed. Matt finished the year with a line of .271/.376/.400, with 8 doubles, a team leading 6 triples and 3 HRs. Matt also walked a team leading 35 times (in 60 games) while striking out only 44 times. Matt went a Dave Robertesque 28/29 in stolen base attempts while commiting only 2 errors in his 52 games in the field.
Pitcher of the Year:
Anibal Sanchez
The 2002 VSL Pitcher of the year, Anibal jumped back from a year lost to injury to show dominant form in the NYPL. A Poor 3-4 record masks the great peripherals Anibal threw up in 15 starts (76 1/3 innings). Anibal put up a 1.77 ERA (9 Unearned runs lead to a 2.83 RA), an 11.91 K/9 (a team leading 101 Ks), a 0.94 WHIP (43 hits, 29 walks) and a 3.48 K/BB ratio. Anibal did hit a team leading 6 batters but only surrendered 3 HRs.
OK... those are the stars. What about the rest?
That's a fair enough question. I'll split these profiles up by 2004 Signees and those in the system before this year. Before we get there, I should mention that 2 players rehabbed in Lowell, David McCarty and Kevin Youkilis.
2004 Signees
Offensive Players
- Matt Ciaramella: The 13th Rounder from Utah, Matt had a tough time in his first professional stop. Ciaramella had a following line of .189/.242/.256 with 6 doubles, 12 walks and was caught stealing in all 3 of his SB attempts.
- Charles Jeroloman: The 21st Rounder out of Auburn, Jeroloman also had a tough adjustment to the pros. Jeroloman went .170/.285/.233 in 48 games, striking out 61 times while walking 23 times. Jeroloman played a mix on 2B and SS, committing 5 errors.
- John Otness: The Undrafted Free Agent out of Washington, he showed the draftees that hitting with wood shouldn't be that difficult. John ended with a final line of .276/.327/.353 with 12 doubles, 7 HBPs and 12 walks (vs. 18 Ks) in 63 games. Otness played a mix of 1B, 3B and OF... committing 6 errors.
- Pat Perry: The 7th Round Catcher out of Northern Colorado, Pat was yet another draftee who started out very slowly offensively. Pat ended with a line of .176/.254/.196 with 2 doubles, 10 walks and 22 strikeouts in 33 games. Pat committed 4 errors behind the plate.
- Andrew Pinckney: The 34th Rounder out of Emory, Pinckney had a fairly succesful transition to the wood bats. Andrew had a final line of .273/.338/.355 with 9 doubles and 3 HRs, walking 22 times but striking out a team leading 74 times. Andrew also had some problem on the bases, stealing 2 bases in 10 attempts. Andrew played all over the infield (1B, 2B, 3B, and SS) and committed 17 errors.
- Logan Sorensen: The 19th Rounder out of Wichita State, Logan only played 11 games in Lowell this season. Those games did show promise however, as Logan went .273/.292/.432 with 6 of his 12 hits going for extra bases. Logan walked twice, struck out 4 times and stole 2 bases in 2 attempts.
Pitching
- Randall Beam: The 18th Round Left Hander out of Florida Atlantic, Randy pitched his way out of Massachussetts in only 9 games. A poor record (1-2, but with 2 saves) masks the peripherals that put him in Augusta. In 16 2/3 innings, Beam allowed only 3 runs (1.62 ERA/RA), 10 hits and 3 walks (0.80 WHIP), and 19 strikeouts (10.26 K/9, 6.33 K/BB).
- Kyle Bono: The 8th Round Pick of the draft out of Central Florida, Kyle signed late in the summer after spending time in the Cape League and earning a huge bonus from the Sox. Kyle pitched 12 innings for the Spinners, giving up 4 hits, 4 runs, 5 walks and striking out 17. That would be: 0-1, 3.00 ERA/RA, 0.75 WHIP, 14.25 K/9 and 3.8 K/BB.
- Andrew Dobies: The first pitcher taken by the Sox in this years draft (3rd Round), the Lefty out of Virginia started 14 games in Lowell, pitching a total of 26 2/3 innings. Dobies went 0-2 with a 2.03 ERA, a 3.04 RA, a 0.94 WHIP, a 12.15 K/9 and a 4.0 K/BB ratio.
- Cooper Eddy: The 36th Round Draft Pick out of New Mexico, Cooper had a rough time in 21 games out of the pen. Eddy went 3-3 with 2 saves, a 4.29 ERA, a 5.55 RA, a 1.37 WHIP, a 6.81 K/9 and a 3.38 K/BB ratio. On the Plus side, he did only walk 8 batters in 35 2/3 innings.
- Andrew Ehrlich: This Right Hander was a 30th Round Pick of the Sox out of Stanford, Ehrlich become the second player of this draft class to make it to AA, getting a call to Portland late in the year. Ehrlich was decent in 14 games out of the pen, going 1-1 with a 3.09 ERA, a 3.94 RA, a 7.31 K/9, a 1.16 WHIP and a 2.60 K/BB ratio. On the negative side, Andrew gave up 4 HRs.
- Jacob Glanzmann: The Undrafted Free Agent Left-Hander from George Mason pitched 5 games in Lowell before earning a demotion to the GCL. There is nothing good to look at in his line... so the squemish should move onto Matt Goodson now. Jacob went 1-2 with a 13.11 ERA, a 14.66 RA, a 2.49 WHIP, a 3.86 K/9 and a 0.63 K/BB ratio.
- Matt Goodson: The 23rd Round Pick out of Texas, this Sophomore-Eligible draftee had a rough start to his professional career. Matt pitched 30 innings in his 12 appearances, finishing with a record of 1-2. Goodson ended the year with a 5.10 ERA, a 6.00 RA, a 1.13 WHIP, a 6.90 K/9 and a 1.92 K/BB ratio. Matt did give up 4 HRs.
- Tommy Hottovy: The 4th Rounder out of Witchita State, The Left-hander shocked the NYPL with his pitching. Hottovy attempted to duplicate the feat of Abe Alvarez and go unscored upon, but couldn't quite do that. However, he was quite good. In 14 starts and 30 1/3 innings, Tommy went 0-1 with a 0.89 ERA, a 1.48 RA, a 0.92 WHIP, an 11.57 K/9 and a 9.75 K/BB ratio.
- Michael James: The 28th Round pick out of UConn, James had a tough time in his 20 appearances out of the pen. The Right-Hander went 0-4 (with a save) with a 10.90 ERA, an 11.16 RA, a 2.02 WHIP, an 8.83 K/9 and a 2.0 K/BB ratio. Mike gave up 7 HRs, hit 4 batters and threw 11 Wild Pitches.
- Ryan Schroyer: The 5th Round pick out of San Diego State, the Righty had a bit of a tough time in Lowell, mostly coming out of the pen. Ryan went 4-2 with a 4.44 ERA (5.36 RA) in 48 2/3 innings over 14 appearances. Ryan has some interesting peripheral numbers: 10.54 K/9, 1.42 WHIP and 2.48 K/BB ratio. Ryan gave up 6 HRs, Hit 5 batters and threw 5 Wild Pitches.
- Scott Shoemaker: Schroyer's teammate out of San Diego State, this undrafted Free Agent actually pitched better at Lowell than the 5th Round Pick. Shoemaker went 1-0 with 3 saves in 17 appearances out of the pen (32 2/3 Innings). Scott finished with an ERA of 2.48, an RA of 4.13, a K/9 of 14.33, a WHIP of 1.22 and a 6.50 K/BB ratio.
- R.J. Swindle: The 14th Round Pick out of Charleston Southern, this Lefthander showed tremendous command in 51 innings out of the pen. RJ went 5-1 with a 1.94 ERA, a 3.18 RA, a WHIP of 0.91, a K/9 of 9.88 and a 14.0 K/BB ratio. RJ walked only 4 batters this year in Lowell.
The Non-2004 Signees
Offensive Players
- Erich Cloninger: A catcher from last year's draft, Erich played in 22 games for the Spinners going .226/.300/.258. He got a late season promotion to Augusta.
- Lee Curtis: The second baseman played 22 games for the Spinners this year, going .250/.371/.363 with 7 doubles, 15 walks and only 14 strikeouts.
- Carlos de la Cruz: This Dominican Outfielder was a regular in the Spinner's lineup, appearing in 64 games. Carlos went .274/.341/.338 with 6 doubles and 3 triples. Carlos walked 21 times but struck out 55 times. He was successful in 60% of his stolen base attempts, going 15/25.
- Robert Evans: This returnee played 22 games for the Spinners before heading south, going .326/.431/.500 with 7 doubles and 2 HRs. Robert walked 15 times while striking out 20 times. He was successful in 75% of his stolen base attempts, going 6/8.
- Heriberto Guzman: Guzman started the year in Augusta, but got the demotion to the Spinners where he played in 60 games. Guzman showed tremendous power (13 doubles, 7 HRs), a knack for getting hit (6 times, at least 3 times in the noggin) and even some patience (22 walks). On the other hand, he was the classic all or nothing power hitter, ending with a BA of .233 and striking out 74 times. Final Numbers: .233/.319/.406
- Christian Lara: The VSL/DSL veteran was jumped quickly from Fort Myers... and continued to show his strengths in Lowell. In 32 games, Lara walked 24 times while striking out only 23 times. He stole 10 bases (in 15 attempts). His power that was shown at Fort Myers was in hibernation up north, hitting only 3 doubles and 2 triples. In 32 games at Short, he committed 10 errors. Final Numbers: .277/.404/.336
- Salvador Paniagua: Paniagua is essentially the catcher equivalent of Guzman. Power (16 Doubles, 6 HRs), and Strikeouts (63 in 50 games). But, a lack of patience is Paniagua's own, only walking 7 times. Paniagua committed 12 errors in 48 games behind the plate. Final Numbers: .222/.260/.423
- Alex Penalo: Didn't mention him in the GCL... I'll mention him here. 3 words: A Lost Season. 11 games in Lowell: .139/.162/.194
- Jason Ramos: The Middle Infielder didn't hit, didn't hit for power... but did walk 15 times in 47 games. Final Numbers: .200/.303/.243
- Lance Schartz: 2 games in Lowell for this catcher... so read the Augusta report for more info. Final Numbers: .200/.200/.200
- Chris Turner: Interesting Power (2 doubles, 4 triples, 5 HRs), No Patience (4 walks) and lots of strikeouts (55). Sounds familiar. Final Numbers: .241/.265/.395
- Dee Williams: After 2 years in the GCL, Dee finally gets the promotion to Lowell. I have a feeling he has reached the end of the line with the Sox. Final Numbers: .203/.338/.263 (8/17 in SB attempts)
Pitchers
- Adam Blackley: Had one game in Lowell on his way to Augusta.
- Robert Cochrane: 22 games of bullpen action for Robert this year. Robert went 0-4 with 3 saves and a 5.00 ERA. He struck out just under one per inning pitched.
- Harvey Garcia: Harvey returned to Lowell and did not have a fun time, going 4-6 with a 5.16 ERA in 14 starts (61 IP). His WHIP was near 1.50, He walked 30, He gave up 8 HRs and threw 7 WPs.
- Barry Hertzler: Barry started the year in Augusta pitching out of the pen... but got demoted into the Spinners rotation. In truth, only 9 of his 15 games were considered starts, but he put in a Team Leading 81 innings. Barry went 4-3 with a 2.67 ERA, a 2.78 RA, a 1.14 WHIP, an 8.11 K/9 and a 3.17 K/BB ratio. He did throw 8 wild pitches.
- Eladio Rodriguez: The former catcher continued his new life as a relief specialist, leading the team with 5 saves. However, his numbers were not that good, ending the year with a 4.75 ERA, a 6.00 RA, a 1.64 WHIP, a 9.50 K/9 and a 1.52 K/BB ratio.
- David Sanders: The Lefty came back to the Spinners and threw 28 1/3 innings. David finished the year with a 2-2 record and a 6.35 ERA. He had a WHIP of 1.84, a K/9 of 5.40 and a K/BB of 1.70.
