2004 Dominican Summer League Red Sox Season Ending Report
Final Record: 33-35-1
How did we do?
By record, mediocre. The Red Sox finished with a record of 33-35-1, finishing Mid-Pack in their conference.
Players
First, a note of caution...
1) I haven't seen these players. I have no idea how they look. I can only base my opinions solely on the stats provided. 2) Unlike every other league that will be detailed, there were no daily boxscore for the DSL. Thus, I have no sense of the ebb and flow for each player. 3) I have no defensive stats. 4) I have no ages for these players.
Offensive Player of the Year:
Manuel Rafael
Manuel does a little bit of everything offensively, all of which adds up to a nice package. Manuel led the team in Batting (.315 - 4th in Conference), On Base Percentage (.381), RBI (45 - Led Conference), Runs (50 - 3rd in Conference) and Hits (81 - 4th in Conference). He was one of the leaders on Slugging (.444), Doubles (20 - 2nd on team and in the Conference), and Triples (5 - Second on team). He was third on the team in walks (26) but had the best BB/K ratio for a batter, striking out only 36 times.
Pitcher of the Year:
Jose Capellan
This was a toss-up... but I picked Jose with the assumption that the amount of Unearned runs given up is truly defensive problems. So, what is good about Capellan? His 10.74 K/9 certainly stands out. So does his 3.25 K/BB ratio. As does his 1.06 WHIP and 2.07 ERA. The only downside... 14 unearned runs allowed. This balloons his RA to 3.99... which isn't all that bad. His 65 1/3 inning pitched led the team.
Other players who might make the jump to the US next year:
Offense
- Richard Santana: Richard is a most interesting prospect. He had 81 hits, just like Rafael. He scored 48 runs (2nd on the team, 4th in conference). He has some "power", hitting 6 doubles, 5 triples and 2 HRs. But, that is not what makes him special. What makes Santana an interesting prospect is this: 49 Stolen Bases. He led the league with that number... and the rest of the team beat him by one, getting a collective 50. He walked 19 times but struck out 53 times. Final Stats: .308/.362/.392
- Roberto Sosa: From a numbers standpoint, a slightly more powerful version of the previously Profiled Rafael. Just under half of his 50 hits (22 to be exact) were for extra bases. He had 15 doubles (3rd on the team) and 6 HRs (2nd on Team and in Conference). He had 25 walks against 44 Strikeouts. Final Numbers: .282/.376/.480
- Junior Moreno: What a bizarre set of numbers for Moreno. Junior led the conference with 21 doubles, was in the top 10 in HRs with 5, was 2nd in the conference in RBI with 41... and yet he hit only .232. He walked enough (28 times) to boost his OBP over 100 points... so, he has enough skills to warrant a trip to Ft. Myers. Final Numbers: .232/.338/.369
Pitching
- Yulkin German: A few subtle differences kept Yulkin from being the Pitcher of the Year. Yulkin led the team in Strikeouts (85 - 12.54 K/9) and had a good K/BB ratio (28 walks - 3.04). He had a decent WHIP (1.31), a good ERA (3.25) and a decent RA (4.28).
- Henry Cabrera: A somewhat high ERA (4.04) and a high RA (5.66) is not that good. But, he has some decent peripherals which could be honed stateside. In particular, he strikes out just over 1 per inning pitched (9.22 K/9), a decent K/BB ratio (2.19 - 26 walks) and a useful WHIP (1.31).
- Francisco Brito: An inverse-image of the above profiled Henry Cabrera, Brito's good ERA (3.45) and RA (4.35) hide some not so nice peripherals. In particular, his strikeout rate (7.5 K/9) is lower than one would like to see at this level. He K/BB ratio is OK (2.27) as is his WHIP (1.38).
Possible Jumpers
Offensive Players
- Moises Santa: A better version of last years Juan Carlos Cotui. Moises is a pure power guy, leading the conference with 9 HR. Problem is, he doesn't walk (7) and he strikes out plenty (49). I wouldn't mind seeing him in Ft. Myers just to see if better instruction could hone his skills. Final Numbers: .257/.296/.436
- Yaguel Rodriguez: Another Conference Leader (his 7 triples led the circuit) who was able to score 47 runs despite only 45 hits. But... the 45 hits are a problem, it led to a Batting Average of only .187. He walked enough to be interesting (28) but coupled that with too many strikeouts (63). Final Numbers: .187/.288/.311
- Carlos Peguero: The only other player with signficant playing time with an OBP above .300 (.306). Carlos has double power (12), ability to walk (20) and doesn't strike out too much (42). Final Numbers: .245/.306/.311
Pitchers
- Olivo Astacio: OK... I kid. He already made it to America this year. But not before accumulating 12 innings in the DSL.
- Emelis Guerrero: Emelis has a decent strikeout rate (42 - 9.78 K/9). Everything else needs help: ERA - 6.28, RA - 6.75, WHIP - 1.50
- Mauricio Mendez: He pitched 62 innings, which was second on the team. His K/BB ratio is decent (37 Ks/22 BBs)... But his K/9 is awful (5.37). His ERA was 4.21 and his RA was 5.23.
- Modesto Ozuna: I only mention Ozuna because he struck out 16 in 14 2/3 innings while only walking 6. The K-rate could bring him to the U.S., but I think he will probably do another year in the DSL.
