Series Information

Minnesota Twins (85-77) vs. Saint Louis Cardinals (95-67)

In the 1987 World Series the Minnesota Twins made their first appearance in the Fall Classic while the St. Louis Cardinals were making their third trip of the decade.

If there was ever any proof of home field advantage the ’87 Twins were it. The Twins went 56-25 at home and only 29-52 away from their home field, the Metrodome. The Twins won the AL West by 2 games over the Kansas City Royals and advanced to the ALCS to play a Detroit Tigers team that had won 98 games that year. The Twins beat the heavily favored Tigers in a schocking five games and awaited the winner of the NLCS. The St. Louis Cardinals won the NL East by 3 games and faced off against the San Francisco Giants. The Cardinals shutout the Giants in the deciding games 6 and 7 to advance to the World Series with a four games to three series win.

In the 1987 World Series the home team won every game. Luckily for the Twins, who again showed their dominance at home, the American League had home field advantage in 1987. With their victory in Game 7 the Minnesota Twins secured their first World Championship in Minnesota and sent St. Louis to their second loss in three chances for a World Title in the 1980’s.
