Series Information

Milwaukee Brewers (95-67) vs. Saint Louis Cardinals (92-70)

The 1982 World Series was played between the surprising Milwaukee Brewers and the steady St. Louis Cardinals. The Brewers had made the postseason in 1981 strike shortened season and in 1982 they seemed poised to make it again. Holding off a late season charge by the Baltimore Orioles the Brewers won the AL East on the last day of the season. With the best offense in the American League, “Harvey’s Wallbangers” as the team was dubbed, were set to take on the AL West winning California Angels. The Brewers, who were led by AL MVP Robin Yount along with AL Cy Young Award winner Pete Vuckovich, beat the Angels three games to two to secure a place in the ’82 Fall Classic.

The St. Louis Cardinals were making there first trip to the playoffs since their seven game defeat in the 1968 World Series. The Cardinals, who unlike the Brewers, hit very few home runs relied more on speed and defense. They won the NL East by 3 games over the Philadelphia Phillies and set up a NLCS match up with NL MVP Dale Murphy and the Atlanta Braves. The Cardinals swept the Braves in three games to move on to their first World Series in 14 years.

Things may have played out differently had the Brewers reliever Rollie Fingers not been injured, but unfortunately for them he had torn a muscle in September and missed the playoffs. The Cardinals ended up winning in seven games giving them their 9th World Championship.
