Series Information

The Red Sox faced the Brooklyn Robins in the 1916 World Series, winning in 5 games. The 1916 Red Sox were carried to the World Series in 1916 almost entirely on the backs of their starting pitchers, Babe Ruth (23-12, 2.11), Dutch Leonard (18-12, 2.36), Ernie Shore (16-10, 2.63), Carl Mays (18-13, 2.39), and Rube Foster (14-7, 3.06).

Game 1: October 7, 1916 at Braves Field

The Red Sox won Game 1, 6-5, in Braves (Boston) Field. Ernie Shore recieved the win, pitching 8 innings, and was removed in the 9th, when the Robins started to rally. The Sox put in Carl Mays, who got the save, a feat rare in those days. Rube Marquard was the losing pitcher for Brooklyn.

Game 2: October 9, 1916 at Braves Field

Game 2 (Braves Field) was an epic 14 inning affair, which was eventually won by the Red Sox, 2-1. Babe Ruth started for the Red Sox and gave up an inside the park HR to Hy Myers in the first inning. Ruth himself tied the game in the third, driving in a run. Ruth continued to pitch for all 14 innings of the game, striking out 4, walking 3, and scattering 6 hits. Game 3: October 10, 1916 at Ebbets Field

The Red Sox dropped Game 3, 3-4, at Ebbets Field, Brooklyn. Carl Mays pitched for 6 innings and received the loss, giving up a run each in the 3rd and 4th innings, 2 runs in the 5th. Rube Foster pitched from the 6th on for the Sox. Jeff Coombs got the win, pitching the first 6 innings for the Robins, giving up a 2-run homer to Boston's Larry Gardner in the 7th, following 2 in the 6th. Jeff Pfeffer Pitched the in the 7th and the 8th and got the save for Brooklyn.

Game 4: October 11, 1916 at Ebbets Field

The Red Sox won game 4 (Ebbets Field), 6-2. Dutch Leonard went the distance to get the win, giving up only 1 earned run. Brooklyn scored 2 in the 1st, but Gardener once again went deep, giving the Sox a 3-2 lead, they never looked back.

Game 5: October 12, 1916 at Braves Field

The Red Sox returned to Braves field to win the series in Game 5, 4-1. Ernie Shore pitched the complete game splendidly, outpitching Jeff Pfeffer, who was replaced in the 8th by Wheezer Dell. The Red Sox scored 2 in the 3rd, following one in the 2nd.

Trivia

  • This was the first World Series in which both teams record a save. The next time this occured was 1924, although it is common/expected today.
  • The next time these teams met was June 23, 2002, with the by then Los Angeles Dodgers sweeping the Red Sox in three games to take the lead in their division.
  • Despite his .173 average, Larry Gardner had the Sox only 2 home runs and led the team for series RBIs, with 6.
