Per ESPN.

Odd. . . of all the things that went wrong with Detroit these past few years, I wouldn't think of Trammel as one of them.

Detroit has gone overboard on contracts in relation to any other reported offers on Free Agents each of the past two offseasons. When these spending sprees didn't pay off, a scapegoat was apparently needed. The manager, whether deserving or not, typically takes the fall in these situations.

The contracts I'm referring to specifically are Ivan Rodriguez, Troy Percival, and Magglio Ordonez. In all three cases nothing close to the amounts they signed with in Detroit was mentioned anywhere else. Ordonez especially strikes me as absurd.

OTOH, Trammell is a hero in Detroit. I heard he may have been the victim of some politicking and a lack of fire in the team, or so sayeth the Sons of Ron LeFlore (motowntigers.com).

They think Jim Leyland may well be the new manager.

They've now cleared the way for what they & the old man wanted, Jim Leyland will now come back to the organization he started out with only to quit after two seasons when the Tigers still suck.

No big surprise. To me, it's a sad situation. He's said to have "lost" the team, meaning they don't respect him, don't play hard for him. I tend to believe this because something I've observed while following the Tigers this year is that every so often, you hear him throw one of his players under a bus in the media for not getting the job done on the field. That didn't seem like the right way to handle it.

It's sad to see a local legend get whacked, but let's face it: Trammell should never have had the job in the first place. There's zero chance that he was the best candidate when he was appointed; you could have plugged in Jeff Blauser or Tommy Herr--retired middle infielders with at least as much managerial experience as Trammell--and had as good a chance at winning. He was a PR hire.

If anything, this is a sign that things are getting better in Detroit, not worse. Of course, if they hire Kirk Gibson, that will be a bad sign.

I heard that too. Trammell had finally lost them with the whole Pudge fiasco. Pudge is still locked up, and there were rumors of him wanting to be dealt if Trammell stuck around. The Detroit Tigers web blog discussed this at the time. The media turned on Trammell's handling of pitchers in late August, particularly with the Bonderman injury. On top of that, I do not believe (though I could be wrong) that he was Dombrowski's man.

I pull for the Tigers in the Central, and I was a fan of Trammell and Sweet Lou Whitikar as a kid. I was hoping those guys would be involved when and if the Tigers ever turned it around.

So the Tigers decided to put their eggs in the basket of a catcher who's lost nearly half his muscle since they started testing for PED's, one who had a crappy year at the plate to boot and who stupidly blamed it on getting divorced.

Good thinking. :)

The Mags and Percival signings were utter disasters. Not sure what Trammel could have done about that.

You're right SJH - that part of it is not Tram's fault. When a team like the Tigers needs to way overpay in order to attract talent, mistakes / bad luck / bad guesses are going to be that much more expensive. Honestly, how easy would it be to recruit for Detroit? Look how some laughed at the Mets and their spending. At least those players get to live in New York. The Detroit area is not as bad as some people make it out to be (hello 5belongstogeorge :) ), but it's not exactly paradise. Plus, next year it's going to be that much more difficult.

The organization once fired Ernie Harwell. Should this come as a surprise?

FWIW (and it's not much), Harwell was fired by Tom Monaghan, an owner who was, in my opinion, simply a more incompetent version Mike Ilitch who followed him. And given the fact that Ilitch successfully trash talked and then abandoned the best place on earth to watch a ballgame so that it could be replaced by the 257th watered down carbon copy of Camden Yards, I am not surpised (nor am I disappointed) by the fact that his personnel decisions have done nothing to improve the Tigers these past few years (It's just too bad that the good fans of Detroit have to put up with all this crap, year after year.)

Tram was screwed over here, and he will be screwed over for what should be a place in the Hall of Fame.

Agreed 100%. The manager gets canned for the GM's shortcomings 99% of the time.

Manager takes the fall for poor GM moves. The old saying of trying to make chicken salad out of chicken shit. Trammel never had a chance

I really thought Leyland was at least 60 when he was in Pittsburgh. The years and the smokes have not been kind to him.

When a new manager gets hired so quickly, you hafta know Trammell's support has been eroding within the organization for a while. No manager can avoid "losing" the team with a lack of support from the FO.

I'll take Jeremy Bonderman in the '06 Tommy John surgery pool.
