1. For some time this season, I've had the impression that there are very few swings and misses against Red Sox pitchers. They throw a good proportion of strikes (64.7% vs. 61.3% strikes for their opponents), but they all seem to be fouled off. It would be interesting to compare the number of fouled-off pitches to the number of pitches swung at and missed and also the ratio of called strikes to swinging strikes for all the clubs.
2. This is how the opponents batted against Red Sox pitchers in 2004 and 2005, and how those performances would rank if they were listed among the 14 AL clubs on offense. This year is a far cry from last year.
2005 Rank 2004 Rank --------------------------------- AVG .276 2nd (tie) .255 15th OBP .336 3rd (tie) .318 15th SLG .440 5th .408 11th OPS .775 5th .727 12th (tie)
