Brandon Lyon is a pretty strange case. He was actually en effective pitcher for the Mets until June 27th (3.16 ERA in 31.1 IP). Then his entire world came crashing down to the tune of 8 ER in 3 IP and the Mets cut him. Most awful was June 30 (Zack Wheeler's home debut) against the Nats when he gave up 6 ER in 2/3 IP and backup catcher Anthony Recker had to finish the game.

So why did Lyon seemingly lose the ability to pitch well? Small sample size? Something worse? I will also say a big reason the Mets cut him is his contract was set up where he would get bonus money for certain amount of games pitched and the first bonus was due when he hit 40 games. They cut him after 37.

Lyon seems like a crazy value to buy low on a minor league deal.  He threw 67 innings of 135 ERA+ ball last season with FIP/xFIP numbers of 3.23/3.94 respectively.  25 of those innings came for the Blue Jays where he actually pitched a good deal better than the already solid performance he'd been giving the Astros.

At this point Fangraphs has his FIP at nearly a full run lower than his actual ERA, and his xFIP is almost half a run lower.  It really looks like he just lost it for a few innings with the Mets and they're dumping him to save money before he starts hitting bonuses.  If the horrible few innings was the abberation he could be a steal.

Contreras will be interesting.  He's now a reliever and was doing quite well in AAA before the Pirates let him go.  His FIP and xFIP last year with the Phillies were both actually substantially better than his 2011 and 2010 seasons, but he apparently was freakishly unlucky with a far higher ERA.

Both seem like pretty solid throw X at the wall and see what sticks options to get on mL deals at this point of the season, especially in the wake of Bailey going to the DL.

That had nothing to do with Contreras. In fact it happened even before Contreras signed.

Wasn't it over Edgardo Alfonzo that same year ?

Rumors are circulating all over the internets that the Sox medical staff used carbon-14 dating to determine Contreras' age.

It says here  that it was a rumor, possibly planted by the MYF, around the Contreras signing; but that Theo denies having thrown a chair since his college days.

Maybe we can trade Lyon to the Pirates and have them trade him back, just for old time's sake.  He's had an interesting career. Can't hurt at this stage.

That article is incorrect. This is one of the initial reports regarding it, over a week before the Contreras negotiations.

Heard Mark Bertrand on TSH speculate that the Contreras signing might be related to helping recruit the recent Cuban defector Misael Silverio. He said it was complete speculation and so do I.

Prior to the 1996 Olympics, the Cuban Team played Team USA in an exhibition game in Norfolk which I went to.  Both Contreras and R.A. Dickey pitched.  Don't believe for a second that I remembered that.  My husband had to remind me.    All I remember is that we won and everyone in the park kept waving their little American flags.

Which one (there can be more than one) of these guys was not Brandon Lyon's fellow bullpen-mate during his prior stint with the Red Sox:

-Chad Fox

-BH Kim

-Ramiro Mendoza

-Anastacio Martinez

-Keith Edward Elam

Here's a hint.  Theo thought he hooped the team  to whom he traded Lyon's creaky elbow.  Little did Theo know, the other team sent back an even bigger pile of crap.

If Lyon is healthy, this could be a big steal. Who knows if he is, but his numbers are impressive the last few years in larger sample size...at least for the price.

I remember he was the Sox closer for a period before we traded for Kim in 2003. I don't expect much, but trying him out for nothing seems like a great try.

We're not going to go out and get Papelbon -- I hope -- and so these deals are part of the "deep depth" strategy, with oldies-but-goodies like Lyon and Jose combined with the arms currently in AAA, and then start rotating guys in and out of the bullpen depending on effectiveness. Zero downside to the strategy.

I think the Bailey injury might be the most consequential so far. It dramatically reduces the margin for error both obviously in the bullpen but also in the rotation, too, because some of the AAA arms that may now be looked at for the bullpen also were potential rotation depth for spot starts. (But I suppose no team can be expected to survive if there's hemoraging in both the bullpen and rotation simultaneously.)

Lyon's FB velocity is down 2-3 mph (depending on whether you use PF/X or BIS). His SwStr% is subsequently down and his K% has plunged from 24% to 15% this year. He's also giving up line drives 24% of his BIP (that's bad) so his .351 BABIP wasn't even that unlucky.

If the Red Sox can figure out what is ailing him (maybe it's mechanics) he could be a nice MR option, but there's no secret reason the Mets dumped him; he was a 33-year-old with a career 4.37 xFIP pitching (very) badly.

I hope it doesn't happen because it would mean our bullpen is even more ravaged than it already is, but there'd be a weird bit of career synchronicity in Brandon Lyon coming back ten years later and being part of another Red Sox closer by committee.

I don't think there's ever been a pitcher with a greater delta between how they look on the mound to my untrained eye and how they actually perform than Jose Contreras.  I'm kind of excited to see what he could do if we need him.
