Somehow missed this one when I was picking end of the draft players (2008).  He has missed two full seasons (2010 and 2012) due to injury.  Alex Speier noted him and a sleeper to watch and I didn't see a thread on him, so here goes.  Info from soxprospects.com.  Projected to start the year in Salem.

Age: 22

Born:
March 13, 1990

Ingleside, IL

Height:
        6-6

Weight:
        235

Bats:
Right

Throws:
Right

Drafted:
50th round, 2008

How Acquired:
Draft

High
School:
Grant
Community HS (IL

Scouting Report:
Large-framed righty with a sturdy build. Smooth, repeatable delivery.
Fastball sits in the low-90s and tops out at 95 mph. Able to go deep
into games while maintaining velocity. With some strength training,
Stroup's fastball could gain even more velocity. Possesses a low-70s
knuckle curveball with plus potential. Also, has a splitter and a
straight changeup. Originally projected to go in the top ten rounds of
the 2008 draft, Stroup slipped due to bonus demands. Missed the 2010
season with an ACL injury. He made his debut in full season ball in
Greenville to start the 2011 season.

Because I really have no life, I sent a tweet to Evan Lepler, the PBP man for the Salem Red Sox.  I asked him if there was an issue with Stroup since it appears he was skipped this time through the rotation.  His response.....

This may sound weird, but he was skipped because he's getting healthier. He won't wear his hulking knee brace in next start.

Still listed on the 7-day DL on Salem's website.  This previous blog post (8/2) from Evan Lepler explains why he's been out for a while.

After about four weeks on the disabled list with a nagging shoulder issue, Kyle Stroup returns to the mound for the Sox tonight in Lynchburg. He’s expected to throw just an inning or two as he ramps up his throwing again.

Final Stats

4-9 , 5.19 ERA, 87 IP, 110 H, 29 BB, 59 K.

It will be interesting to see what his future is in this organization.  He is still only 23, but has been marred by injuries (missed all of 2010 and 2012) and is  Rule V eligible in 2013-14 according to soxprospects.com.  Wonder if his future may be as a reliever.

Sad to report that this once-promising prospect has been released by the Sox from Salem's roster following the promotion of Joe Gunkel. He managed to play parts of 4 seasons in the Sox system despite the serious injuries he dealt with (blown right ACL in spring 2010, blown left ACL in spring 2012). But he also made his own bed by reporting to Fort Myers 60 lbs overweight in the spring of 2009, and never really got back into top playing shape.

It'll probably be a while before another Mr. Irrelevant is able to successfully bargain for $50,000 over the $100k slot as the final pick of the 50th round in any MLB draft. The $150 grand he received in 2008 as part of a 7-year deal -- the same bonus the Sox gave to 7th-rounder Tim Federowicz that year -- remains the largest-ever for any final draft selection.

Not surprised.  Was dismal this year (8.25 ERA, 2.5 WHIP) with command issues (21 BB in 24 IP).
