One of those soul crushing losses as TB falls 6-4 to Twins.

Joel Peralta allows a solo HR to Ryan Doumit and the a 3-run HR to Josmil Pinto to get the loss.  Wil Myers and Sean Rodriguez each homered.

This team has not and will likely never draw at the Trop.

Rays keep the Sox's magic number at 4 with a 6-2 win over Texas.

Alex Cobb throws 8 solid innings (6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 10 K)  to go to 9-3.  Wil Myers homered and drove in 3 to pace the offense.

Matt Moore has one of his worst outings as he allows 6 runs (5 ER, 3 HR) in 4 innings to fall to 15-4.  James Loney  and Desmond Jennings drive in the TB Runs.

After 6 hours, 54 minutes,18 innings and 11 pitchers, David Dejesus singles home the game winner to give TB a 5-4 win.  Dejesus and Ben Zobrist had 7 of the Rays 14 hits and all 4 of their RBI.  Jeremy Hellickson gets the win with 2.1 scoreless innings.

Interesting article on how owner Stu Sternberg feels that the Rays ML low attendance will effect the budget for the Rays.

OK, so what about Monday's game? While Price is understandably the guy Maddon wants to give the ball to, it's also true that the Rangers sort of have the whammy on him. Price is 1-4 with a 5.98 ERA in eight regular-season starts against Texas and is 0-3 with a 4.66 ERA in three postseason starts. Those are the only three playoff starts of Price's career, and remember also that on that memorable final day of 2011 he started and dug a big hole for the Rays when he allowed six runs in four innings to the Yankees. So he has a checkered past in big games.

Per ESPN's preview of the game tonight....

I kept hearing about his record against the Rangers yesterday to the point where I ended up screaming at my radio on the way home. I guess the people that kept parroting those stats didn't bother to check how, uh, different the Rangers' lineup is these days.

I can't agree with Maddon's decision to start Hellickson (3rd worst ERA among qualified SP while playing in a pitcher's park with quality defense behind him). The Red Sox maul right-handed pitching and, applying ZiPS Rest of Season Projections, things don't look pretty for Helly:

Position Player Hand wOBA

CF Jacoby Ellsbury L .346

RF Shane Victorino S .332

2B Dustin Pedroia R .311

DH David Ortiz L .420

1B Mike Napoli R .314

LF Daniel Nava S .369

C Jarrod Saltalamacchia S .347

SS Stephen Drew L .343

3B Will Middlebrooks R .271

There's also Mike Carp's .382 sitting on the bench.

Just hope he gets a big zone from the ump and is able to nibble with his fastball at the lower corners while getting whiffs with his breaking stuff below the zone. That's a lot of stuff to be hoping for though.

The question now is how to sequence Moore and Archer. Although, if the offense doesn't pick it up, it might not matter.

Now the interesting off season begins.  With a likely payroll cutback due to poor attendance, David Price may end up on the block with his impending free agency coming after next year.  Ben Zobrist has a club option for $7M and Evan Longoria's contract starts kicking up (from the 2008 extension) to $7.5 M next year.

Maddon did what he could to work around the shortcomings in his bullpen and the recent shitty performance of the back end of his rotation, but ultimately you can't overcome your offense having synchronized their cycles and all going into the tank at once.

Rays 1st pick in the 2011 has been suspended 50 games for a violation of the drug testing policy for a drug of abuse(apparently marIjuana). He will serve his suspension as he recovers from TJ surgery. He is the 3rd top Rays pick to violate a substance abuse/PED policy in the last 2 years.
