I have a real problem with the whole rules regarding this situation.  Basically, any foreign-playing player that is an RFA gets screwed by this.

His choices are

1) Take what his team offers

2) Get what a team is willing to pay for him, and then let every team make a claim on him, with his old team having a priority.

The Team's choices are:

1)  Offer him less that he's worth

2)  Let him walk for picks when someone offers him something.

3)  Sign him for what some other team thinks he's worth.

I think the easy solution is that an offer sheet negates Return waivers.

Yeah, but this will never happen again. It's a unique scenario because the lockout allowed O'Reilly to play in the KHL. RFA's aren't going to play overseas during a contract dispute.

Well, they could.  This rule removes a point of leverage for them.

Would Colorado have been able to put in a waiver claim on him?  How incredible would that have been - let him go, take the picks, then get him back on waivers.

DiPietro's 1st start since getting waived, allowed 5 goals out of 12 shots in 20 minutes and got yanked.

Yeah, the article referenced it, but this hasn't been a good week at all for Ricky D. After being waived, he made comments to the media that indicated he was going through depression and thoughts of suicide, the latter of which he backtracked on yesterday. He also said the Islanders "ripped [his] heart out, stabbed it, set it on fire, and flushed it down the toilet." He's clearly going through some personal issues, but he can't say this move blindsided him.

Given his speak, I really don't think it's been personal issues and more just him being pissed about his situation. I know the suicide stuff was in jest with him talking about driving off the road after a few tough games but it was really meant to tell the support if his wife. Basically a while lot to do about nothing. Sucks about him but so be it. A lot of people had said the same things in less, oh, weird terms.
