I'd rather have Rupp if I'm New York. Weird trade.

Odd move. Rupp and Powe are basically the same player.
I'd rather have Rupp if I'm New York. Weird trade.
Maybe they're trying to shake things up - but not too much? In that case, trading guys who are similar might make sense...

Powe/Palmeiri gives them some depth at forward which they need with Callahan and Krieder out. Losing Rupp hurts but they must feel there are enough leaders on the team to absorb the hit and that Mashinter is ready to step in as a 4th liner who can take on heavyweights.

Yeah, THIS doesn't have potential to get ugly. Not at all...
Speaking on the TEAM 1040 Radio on Tuesday, Canucks general manager Mike Gillis addressed the playing time of his two goalies.
"We are conscious of ice time and we have to win games," he said. "We don't have the luxury of peoples' feelings."

Verdict from this story about a Nicklas Backstrom garden gnome giveaway: Troy Brouwer is hilarious.
Troy Brouwer disagreed.
“I wouldn’t mind getting one in my home,” he said. “It looks like Phil Kessel. It’s funny though. That’s gonna freak my dogs out.”

Wow. He didn't put up points alongside Chris Thorburn and Jim Slater, go figure.

Looks like Kimmo Timonen has agreed to a 1 year, $6m extension - also, Andrei Loktionov has been dealt to the Devils for a 2013 5th, and Ben Lovejoy goes to the Ducks for a 2014 5th.
Per Darren Dreger, the Leafs have begun testing the waters on trading Phil Kessel

Do you think Nonis is indiscriminately asking teams for two 1st round picks and a second thinking, "Hey, Boston got that for Kessel, and look how that worked"?
Posted 07 February 2013 - 11:43 AM
His predecessor got the equivalent of 2 late firsts and a 2nd for 3 months of Kaberle, I think that'll be fresher in his mind.

5th round pick for Loktionov? I'd have taken that gamble no question.

The Howson firing was a long time coming - just wish they had pulled the trigger at the end of last season. Kekalainen seems like a major find:
From NHL.com
Prior to going to his native Finland, Kekalainen spent eight years with the St. Louis Blues
as a scout, assistant general manager and director of amateur scouting,
where he oversaw drafts that landed the team key parts like David Backes, T.J. Oshie, Patrik Berglund, David Perron, Alex Pietrangelo, Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Tarasenko. The last four of those seasons, he worked for Davidson, who joined the Blues in 2006 as team president.
Prior to working for the Blues, Kekalainen spent eight years with the Ottawa Senators
as their top European scout and later as director of player personnel.
With the Senators, he led drafts that brought such players as Jason Spezza, Chris Phillips, Martin Havlat, Anton Volchenkov, Antoine Vermette and Ray Emery to Ottawa.
Probably a good thing they fired Howson before the trade deadline. It'll be interesting to see what Kekalainen does.

Yeah, good for Davidson to come to the realization that Howson was awful, but Craig Patrick should've taken care of him last season. Columbus just seems to react to everything slower than other teams.

Devils pick up Ponikarovsky from the Jets for picks.
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=415941
Winnipeg traded veteran forward Alex Ponikarovsky to the New Jersey Devils just hours after acquiring 24-year-old left-winger Eric Tangradi from the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Jets sent their 2013 seventh-round draft pick to Pittsburgh for Tangradi. Winnipeg then got a 2013 seventh-round draft pick and a 2014 fourth-round pick from New Jersey in exchange for Ponikarovsky.

Not really sure where else to post this, but this article by Katie Baker is a great example of why she's one of my favorite hockey writers around. It's laid back, humorous, serious, insightful, and informative all at once. She manages a Clint Malarchuk reference, a CorsiRel reference, and a link to a PlayerUsage chart from hockeyanalytics...and I'm only halfway done. It's nothing groundbreaking, but solid hockey writing.
Edit: And I just stumbled across the Bakersfield Condors video. My life is complete.

Strang speculates that a Lucic hit could be the source of whatever ails Nash. I don't remember the play, but the Rangers apparently were fuming over it.

Lingering after-effects from Lucic crushing him last week.

Ryan O'Reilly's dad is a raving lunatic
Ryan is not a superstar based on skill but character. I know this for a fact the players he was yesterday will not be the player he was tomorrow he will continue to grow learn and thrive .The world values it less and less, yet everyone is looking for those players that eat sleep and drink the game and are unselfish plus compete because they are intrinsically motivated for excellence. This is another trait humankind is slowly losing! It used to be a bigger part of our game because we used to let kids develop character and test themselves without all the importance put on systems methods and criteria of adults.

I believe Ruff's sacking makes Clode the longest tenured coach in the Eastern Conference.
Posted 20 February 2013 - 04:12 PM
The Sabres need a complete organizational overhaul. Ruff needed to go, but nothing will change unless they send Regier packing as well. That team has no talent. They have sunk a ton of money into a defense that is complete garbage. Blow it up, build around Hodgson and Grigorenko.
Shame the Bruins couldn't drive the nail in Lindy's coffin last Friday.
They should probably hang on to Robyn Regehr too.
