[Lose Remerswaal]

We got a new PC last week.  Our old b&w printer won't work with it (it's got to be 12 years old, but it was fast, took cheap cartridges, and they lasted forever, but can't find drivers for Windows 8).  We don't need color, don't need a fax machine, scanner, copier, or any of the other stuff.

 

Any chance this kind of thing exists for a reasonable price?

And if we use it to print 30 documents in a month, that's a busy month.

Why not get a monochrome laser printer? You can get one from $60-$120 which isn't too bad. Plus you don't have to deal with inkjet. i'd much rather have a laser printer and just buy a toner cartridge which last a lot longer than an ink cart.

 

A $40 toner cartridge is going to last about 1,500 pages where a $20 ink cartridge is going to last 300-400.

If you re going to get a  black and white printer, get a laser one. It may seem more expensive, but inkjets are designed to get your money through the cartridges. Plus, the quality is better on the laser one.

Echoing the Brother/laser sentiment -- 2270DW gets you Duplex for $99 shipped from Amazon/Newegg.

 

Picked one up a few months ago and haven't looked back. Can buy generic toner from eBay (varying quality) or Meritline (shop shipping, but decent toner). Couple other suggestions from people in the Amazon comments for any of these Brother printers.

If it is going to be black and white and used that little then laser is the only choice.

If you have an inkjet, you can get cartridges from inkfarm.com for cheap. I get them for an old HP895C for less than $7 a piece (with coupons). The sell laser cartridges too.

Dell Networked Duplex laser printer w/ Airprint and Google cloudprint support (not sure if these matter to you, if you have an iPad or iPhone it's pretty handy).  Has ethernet already built in, just plug it

into your router.

I have the older one (without the Airprint), been running for 3-4 years.  I print about as much as you (10-15 docs a month).  I'm still on the original toner.

Brother and that hack look like that might be the trick.  Will report back, probably next weekend
