February starts off on a high note, with John Erskine elbowing Wayne Simmonds right in the chops, amounting to zero PIM. Following that, Rinaldo and Hendricks fought and each got 5 and a game misconduct. So don't worry, NHL officials are in mid season form

The Erskine non-call was a missed call, no doubt. What does the Rinaldo/Hendricks fight have to do with officiating though? The officials were completely in the right to toss them both.

Dan Ellis in his two starts this year for the Hurricanes has been on fire.  1 goal allowed in 70+ shots between the Sabres and Senators (shutting out the Sens last night).  I'm hoping Coach Muller goes with him a bit more since Cam Ward is struggling early.

I didn't realize that the fight occurred before the faceoff. Wasn't very clear in the replays I saw. In that case yes, you're right

Preds hand San Jose their first loss in a shootout. It was especially sweet considering the fact that Hornqvist and Erat didn't play.

A quite physical Ovi still can't prevent his team from being down 2-0 to the Pens at the 8:00 mark in the first.

Pens up on the Caps 2-1 early on in the first.

Ovechkin is playing with Jay Beagle and Wojtek Wolski. Yeesh.

Ha.  2-1.  Caps must've scored while I was out having a smoke.

A John Carlson dump in bounces off the stanchion and into the net to tie things up.

A crazy carom off a stanchion takes Vokoun by surprise.  2-2 in Washington.

EDIT: Dammit.

Well to be fair he almost beat the Rangers too. I honestly think that this goes to prove that in the right system any goalie can look like an all star. Dale Hunters system hid how bad Holtby really is.

Kunitz bags his third on the PP.  Probably didn't help that the Caps were essentially down to three men because of a broken stick.

There isn't a group that needs more work than the Penguins' power play, specifically their 5 on 3.

Holtby isn't a bad goalie. Not even close. Holtby has played poorly in three games this year. Holtby has been excellent in Hershey and in Washington under both Hunter and Boudreau (1.79 GAA, .934 SV% in 14 games in 10-11). To say that he was only a product of Hunter's system speaks greatly to not having watched Holtby at all outside of last year's playoffs. This is all a pretty big overreaction. Holtby is a 23-year-old with tons of talent who happens to be in a rut. Is Holtby as good as the 1.95 GAA he posted in the playoffs last year? Of course he isn't, but he's still a quality goalie. For what it's worth, I've always been very high in Neuvirth and have predicted since before the season began that both goalies would get at least 40% of the starts and Neuvirth would start a potential first playoff game should it occur. That isn't to say I think Holtby is a bad goalie, I am just way higher on Neuvirth than most.

To put things into perspective, Holtby has a 4.52 GAA and .862 SV% over four games that look worse because he happened to start the season in a funk. Last year a 24/25-year-old Rask had a stretch of four games with a 4.20 GAA and .841 SV% but I doubt people were genuinely worried about him long term. Are people legitimately concerned that Cory Schneider has turned into a pumpkin due to his slow start through four games? Holtby got torched by Tampa and Pittsburgh, two of the most talented offensive teams in the league. It just looks worse because he doesn't have 25 other starts to balance out the numbers.

Leafs trail the Canes 2-1 late in the 2nd. Bozak just had a goal waived off, with the war room determining it was kicked in. I'm not complaining, but it seemed like a bad call. Bozak was stopping and the puck sort of glanced off his foot.

At some point the league and competition committee need to sit down and figure out the kicking rule. There is no consistency and there is way too much grey area with what defines a "distinct kicking motion."

Viktor Fasth put on an absolute clinic against San Jose tonight. Very calm and almost no rebounds, Ducks win 2-1.

Agreed. Maybe the first would be excusable but the last one when he was out cold and on his back was a bit much.

Tom Sestito doubles his career goal total, then Lecavalier goes with Talbot and gives him a late shot while they're both on the ice

Vinny Lecavalier just got in a fight. Wow.

Edit: yes, he did punch Talbot when he was on his back.

If Sestito gets a hat trick, even on an ENG, I'd suggest everyone call their loved ones and then prepare for the Rapture.

It would be up there with Eric Boulton's trick versus the devils a few years ago.

Man Clarkson has become a hell of a player.

You know, I remember that early on, Mike Knuble wasn't much of a scoring threat or a guy that anybody got terribly excited about, but damn, just a couple seasons after he left the Bs he took off and put up a lot of points. I think Clarkson looks like a better player than Knuble, whose skill set was more limited, but they both seem to have come from nowhere to be scoring forces.

I wouldn't call him a scoring force... its not like he's a Kovalchuk or Malkin or something... he scores mostly garbage goals or hard work goals.

This is not to discredit his ability, but some of it does have to do with puck luck when you're scoring those types of goals.

Ask Espo about puck luck. It sure found him. Not that there is a comparison between these guys, but anybody who is scoring 30 goals in this league of tight defense can be thought of, albeit loosely, as a scoring force.

Andrew Desjardins got kicked out of the Sharks-Hawks game for a hit to the head of Jamal Mayers but it was clear on replay it was shoulder-to-shoulder.  That's the 2nd time in a week that the refs have botched that call.  Needs to be reviewable.

The NHL rescinded the match penalty practically before the end of the game, which tells you how bad they thought the call was.

Loads of angst right now in our nation's capital about the Caps - fairly disastrous start to the season, and the defense/goalies have been unable to hold a single opponent to 2 goals or less so far.

Next game is at Pitt on Friday, which they are likely to loose (just lost at home to Pitt last week 6-3), and then back home Saturday against the beatable Panthers - if they also loose that game to drop to 2-9-1 it is going to be ugly - they will likely be booed out of the building, and I suspect going forward even if the games are technically "sell outs", there may be some tickets going unused - that are fairly unwatchable at this point....

Its a short season, would not be great to be stuck on 5 points, 12 games into a 42 game slate.

I made it down to the Blues-Preds game last night. First time seeing one in St. Louis. Boy, did they have a shitty night. On the bright side, Budweisers were plentiful.
