Ray Lewis used a banned substance to come back this season?

Rodney Harrison was suspended (rightfully) four games b/c he broke the rules. It cost him and his team. Ray Lewis will get no such suspension. It does no harm to him nor his team. In fact, Lewis has helped his team immeasurably this past month since his return from injury.

In my opinion the two are incompatible.

But Rodney failed a drug test, Ray Lewis didn't.

This sets up too perfectly for Ray Lewis' deluded self-image.  He comes back miraculously from his injury, tells the team he will retire at season's end, and leads them to the Super Bowl.  He knew he took a banned substance so the retirement is perfectly timed so he won't get suspended and have it on his record.

Did Harrison actually fail a test? I thought he was caught being on the receiving end of an HGH supplier's distro list.

Maybe but he got caught by the league, whereas Lewis got caught by Sports Illustrated (at least that's what I think happened).

Rodney did not fail a test. Rodney's name was on a list of other names of people/customers who had received a prohibited substance, likely for the purpose of accelerating healing. It isn't hard to get this information right. Nor, to his credit, did he deny it or concoct a screwball account of devilish involvement, but took the blame upon himself and moved on.

One larger point that has already been made but seems to have been confused already is that whatever the facts of the case, this has the potential to be a scandal, fairly or not...but it would seem that not all scandals are equal in the eyes of the WWL.

I don't understand - didn't Lewis admit to CNNSI that he obtained stuff from this guy?  The quote from the article seems clear to me:

When asked by SI whether he had talked to Ross, Lewis replied, "I told him to send me some more of the regular stuff, the SWATS, the stickers or whatever." Asked by the magazine whether what he was sent helped, Lewis replied, "I think a lot of things helped me."

So we are supposed to believe he used all the "stuff" from SWATS but not the illegal "stuff," aka spray with IGF-1?

I'm fascinated by the complicated moral area he occupies in that he may have been caught trying to cheat without (perhaps) actually cheating.

Though I'll grant if he was spritzing antler resin he was probably doing other shit as well. I mean, I sorta hope so--I can't imagine he's stupid enough to rely exclusively on the antler thing.

Rodney passed the "don't be involved in a double murder test", though.

You guys are really great at missing the fucking point completely.  You are so blinded by Patriots are the best ever mentality and your hatred of anyone who gives the Patriots problems that you refuse to see the real issue at stake.  Instead you want to witch hunt.

The real issue at stake here is how do we score some of this shit for Napoli?

Psalms 91 is about how if you abide by and place your trust in God, you will be unharmed even as all around you are anhialated by foes.

Doesn't sound like much of a team player, if you ask me.

I'm having a hard time remembering a retirement tour so... douchey.

Look, Lewis was a fantastic player-- in the conversation of the best LBs of all time. Some other great players (Elway, Bettis, Strahan, John Hannah, Hacksaw Reynolds, and drunk Max McGee) all retired after the Super Bowl, and I can't remember anything like this-- even setting aside the suspect things in Lewis' past.  Granted, we live in a different media-savvy world now, but holy shit what a carnival of douchebaggery this has become.

He has managed to surpass the mult-edition Favre 'retirement' tour as the most unappealing, most legacy-degrading passage into that good night of the modern NFL.

Too bad, he was an amazing player in his day

Why are the people in the media so scared to just tell him to eat it or not suck him off? Did any classy NFL star ever get such a sendoff? Did Montana? Walter Payton? This is odd.

Lewis and those advising him seemed to think that enough time had passed for people to see beyond Ray's "troubles" and judge him based on "the totality of his career."

He/they completely misread the public.  And the disconnect is so profound that it has produced a tone-deafness to the Ray Lewis retirement tour that is awe-inspiring.

Yeah, the insecure narcissism is intense. When you are truly great, the glory of the retirement tour is done for you, in homage to you, not by you. Think: Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

Has anyone else noticed his use of "my" throughout the week? Like, when asked about the deer antler stuff, he says something like, "I won't devote any of MY press to that." Like he controls the message.

His self-centeredness wouldn't drive me so nuts if his dance wasn't so damn stupid.

Hell, for a recent example there's even Chipper Jones in 2012! I believe every single team gave him some kind of memorabilia after he played his last game at their ballpark this season. IIRC, the Red Sox gave him a number 10 from the scoreboard.

God has decided that 3500 bones per month isn't enough for his babymomma.

Also, I was unaware, until I was blessed with this knowledge, that Ray Lewis was known for his blocking on the field.

Well, at least the suit is white, with patches of crimson splashed around it.  Not sure he would wear boots like that though . . .
