Spikes absent today

Have a feeling the Spikes era is not going to come to a pretty conclusion

Total speculation but given that Spikes' contract expires after this year, it's possible this is related to a desire for an extension OR said desire already being rebuffed by the team. Other members of his draft class have notably been extended (Gronk/Hernandez) and others (Cunningham) won't be offered the chance to return. Spikes isn't an essential piece for the future (I'm not a fan of his skill set in this era, while acknowledging he'd probably be a Pro Bowler if this were 1985) and should be on the field less in 2013 than he was in 2012, if the Pats pass defense is going to improve.

IOW, it's about money. leverage and playing time. As long as he shows up when it's mandatory, it'll be OK.

I saw him at a restaurant in South Beach Friday night - seemed healthy and not too fucked up.

And he didn't show me his dick, so... total bonus.

He wanted to but he didn't want to be on the hook for the co-pay.

I have a feeling both sides arent really sure about how he would fit on this team next year.  Spikes must look at Mayo, Hightower, Jones and Collins and realize they look like the front 7 guys of the future and are all cost controlled for a few years.  Then from the Patriots perspective, they look at Spikes and realize he is probably just a 2 down player.  I agree his skillset isnt outstanding, but his tone setting ability does provide some additional value.  The biggest question in this whole situation is how much can you really pay for a more fiery version of Ted Johnson in todays game.

NFL reaches deal with Microsoft. The NFL announced a partnership with Microsoft on Tuesday that could include more technology being implemented on sidelines.

From the league's news release:

"Coaches and players will soon have access to a variety of
cutting-edge Microsoft solutions, including Surface tablets to enhance
on-field communications, photo viewing and play calling. Microsoft and
the NFL envision a sideline of the future with players reviewing in-game
photos from different camera angles directly from the sideline and head
coaches calling plays off connected Surface tablets instead of today's
static paper products. With Microsoft technology, NFL coaches, players
and other personnel will have the technology they need to improve
decision-making and on-field performance."

Presumably, videocameras will still be offlimits.
