unfortunately you don't have Ossie to start the thread this year, but the African Cup of nations starts tomorrow in South Africa. this is the second year in a row they're holding an African cup of nations because they are switching to odd number years so it won't be held the same year as the WC ( as was the case in 2010).

The kick off match is the host country playing Cape Verde, my ancestral homeland which has qualified for its first ACN. I think it starts at 11am Saturday morning.

Unrelated, I know, but why don't we have Ossie? By Ossie, you mean the ossie schreckengost, the German guy who posts about football?

Oh I just figured he'd have started the thread by now. I hope he comes in here to post.

According to Grant Wahl, the games will be available on ESPN 3, which is certainly an upgrade from past availability.

The big question is this, at what point does the Ivory Coast spectacularly flame out this time?

this really is the last chance for their golden generation. I was listening to the Guardian football podcast and they said they couldn't have made a more nonsensical choice for manager. Instead of getting an experienced foreigner or a local who understands the country, they get an inexperienced foreigner.

Cape Verde pick up a point in a match where they outclassed the hosts. Cv had a few good chances, and rsa ws pretty well disorganized.

Also, I think the Cv keeper is nicknamed grandma

Gervinho scored a class goal against Togo today:

pure insanity in Group A. http://m.espn.go.com...llafrica&id=378

Morocco and Cape Verde tied with at 2 points going into the final match of the group stage.
going into the last 20 minutes, Cape Verde trails Angola 1-0 (from an own goal) and morocco led South Africa 1-0. At the point Morocco would have been in as group winner with south Africa runner-up. Then:

South Africa scores in the 71' to tie Morocco at 1-1
Cape Verde scores off a corner at 81' to tie Angola 1-1
Morocco scores at 82' to go ahead of RSA 2-1
South Africa scores at 86' to again tie Morocco 2-2
Cape Verde scores on a counter at 93' to beat Angola 2-1

So Cape Verde and South Africa advance with RSA as group winner

Mali and Ghana advance out of Group B.  Chipolopolo take on Burkina Faso today. And Nigeria battle Ethiopia.

in group C Zambia, the defending champs, were knocked out, as they drew with Burkina Faso and Nigeria beat Ethiopia. Burkina Faso a big surprise winning the group

and right on cue, Ivory Coast blows it against Nigeria losing 2-1. I'm kind of pulling for Mali since I've always liked seydou keita

Now I know why the Ivorians always lose, their keeper sucks. The first goal is pathetic

But the second goal is a cracker
