This is pretty awesome - Cory Schneider shares the ice pre-game with a transgender kid who chose his name after Schneider.

Anneke, fantastic taste in superhero gitch and all, was a gender nonconforming child from a very young age, according to Nicole, who assumed her daughter was a tomboy.

Fast-forward from the beginning of Anneke’s journey to where she is today and, well, a lot has changed.

For starters, Anneke is now Cory, a 16-year-old male currently blissfully residing on cloud nine after sharing the ice at Rogers Arena with Vancouver Canucks goaltender Cory Schneider.

Yes, the most recent chapter to Cory’s story had him standing beside his hero, after whom he renamed himself upon making the transition to become male, as part of Minor Hockey Week when the Canucks hosted the Calgary Flames on January 23rd.

Cory, who began taking hormone blockers at age nine to suppress female puberty and the development of secondary sex characteristics, is a goaltender for Britannia Hockey Academy and a C1 team in Ridge Meadows, and for many of his teammates reading this, surprise!

While many of you think you know Cory, you now truly know Cory, who was Anneke, but was never truly happy as female. It’s been a long journey for Anneke/Cory, one filled with, astonishingly, more ups than downs thanks in large part to how understanding and accepting friends, family and Brittania Secondary School have been.

Taking hormone blockers essentially put the hold button on puberty giving Anneke time to decide what made her happy. After some soul searching, she began taking testosterone roughly a year-and-a-half ago to begin the transition to become male.

Cory hasn’t had any surgeries; he may consider that later on. For right now, he’s happy finally being comfortable in his own skin.

“I went into high school not who I am, but being in grade 10 now I feel very much like part of the high school,” said Cory. “I felt like an outsider, now I have a great support system and a great group of friends, which I’ve never had before. Life is great.”

Cool story. I feel like it would be pretty odd explaining to someone that you named yourself after him, though.

I'll write up my review of 24CH later, I'm sure you'll all be waiting with bated breath.

Marc Bergevin is a gangsta (he says in best dorky white voice) for keeping the money down on the Subban contract. Before the Leafs game he was interviewed by the Habs radio guy and he snarled into the mic that he was keeping the Subban discussions private and to leave it at that. The radio guy was a little taken aback. I thought discussions were heading downhill then but it looks like he had PK right where he wanted him. It'll probably cost the Habs a few clams down the line but Bergevin seems committed to avoiding the crappy contracts that have hamstrung the team for years. I'm optimistic.

Zach Boychuk was waived by Carolina and picked up by Pittsburgh. Great move by Shero and a pretty poor mismanagement of assets by Rutherford - almost all of Boychuk's NHL ice-time has come in the bottom 6. I guess getting Chad LaRose his ice time was more important.

also, Taranna claims goon Frazer McLaren

What the fuck is going on in Montreal?

The flashy defenceman's first job will be adapting to a new regime that puts team ideas ahead of individual skill.

Already, goalie Carey Price said the post-victory triple-low-five celebrations he used to do with Subban have been banned. Only team celebrations are now tolerated. The Canadiens this season skate to centre ice after wins and raise their sticks to the fans.

"It's a team concept," said Therrien of the team rule. "You have to respect the game, the other team and the fans.

"The way we decided to celebrate this year is to salute the fans because they deserve it."

I don't have a problem with this really.  It's a nice little thing to be saluting the fans after a win this year after the damn lockout that they put us through.

Plus in regards to Subban, there is no denying that he had a tendency to be a little in love with himself on he ice.  We can see it in games just against Boston, where he would ask a guy to fight and then run and hide and make someone else do it, or his diving antics and laughing about it afterwards.  Also when he was being booed in Boston in the playoffs and scored the tying goal he made a motion to his ear for the crowd.  I don't neccesarily have a problem with some of those things, but I have heard that he is not always well liked by his teammates because of his antics.

Agree to disagree. I think characters make watching the sport more entertaining. Beating Montreal in 2011 was all the more fun because it came at the expense of Subban.

I enjoy exuberance. I enjoy watching people who have the appearance of genuinely loving the sport. I get that not all people are going to want to celebrate like that, but let the ones who want to do it.

For example - I thought this was great:

That is fair, but I think this type of celebration, meaning a goal celebration, is different than some of the stuff Subban did, and this is coming from someone who likes Subban.  Subban has a tendency I think to go overboard on some of the other aspects of the game.  I don't necessarily have problems with it.  The problem comes in when it starts bothering your teammates.  That just can't happen and something needs to change if that is the case.

Goal celebrations are fine I would guess, but some of the other junk is probably what is bugging them.
