The tournament begins on Boxing Day and will be seen in Canada on Rogers Sportsnet. Here is the schedule: http://www.hockeycan...932/la_id/1.htm
It will be interesting to see Seguin play on the big ice. So far he has 24 goals in 27 games with his Swiss team.

Canada's playing Adler Mannheim right now (TSN2 for those of us north of the border). Nice to see Seguin in action again, but Mannheim's up 1-0 late in the 1st.

Also, the PBP guy is always mispronouncing Dennis Seidenberg's name. Kinda like Seedinburg.

Well despte being widely outshot the German team scored a 2-1 overtime win. Tyler Seguin scored Canada's only goal. Patrice Bergeron had a clear cut breakaway in overtime but was stopped on a deke. Jason Pominville scored the winner on a breakaway shortly after.

Pominville continues his tradition of stabbing Canada in the back! First he chooses to play for the US internationally, and now he beats Canada in the Spengler Cup?

And to top it off, he was born in Canada!

5-0 final. Oiler netminder Dubnyk played an excellent game stopping a couple of breakaways including one by Patrick Kane.

I've never followed the Spengler Cup before. Can you explain how rosters work? I know Kane (and Seguin) were on Biel in Switzerland for the regular season. However, as you noted (and I checked to make sure it wasn't a Rick Nash a typo), Kane is playing for Davos for the Spengler Cup. Will Kane then return to Biel? Do players often shift to a team in the Spengler Cup solely for the tournament? Seguin, of course, is on Canada -- but that makes more sense to me than transferring between teams in the same league.

Any explanation would be much appreciated!

A quote from Wikipedia re player additions: "Since the tournament is open to both clubs and national teams, a rule exists that allows club teams to hire up to four additional players (three skaters and one goaltender) for the duration of the competition. Prior to the 2010 edition, six reinforcement players (five skaters and a goaltender) were allowed per team. In practice, not all participants choose to take advantage of the rule to the same extent, and it works mostly to the host team's benefit."

Patrick Kane scored with just 22 seconds to go to give Davos a 5-4 win over their Czech opponent. This sets the stage for the Championship game tomorrow with Kane, Thorton and Co. taking on Bergeron, Seguin and Canada. The winning team gets to split $250,000.

Led by Boston Bruin Patrice Bergeron's 4 points, Canada defeated Davos 7-2 to win the Spengler Cup. Canada scored in the very first minute of play and it never looked in doubt from that point of the game. One of the most interesting things for me in this tournament was witnessing the love the Swiss have for the game of hockey. It was a full loud arena for every game nomatter who was playing.

So we can add the Spengler Cup to Bergy's resume. WJC Gold, WC Gold, Olympic Gold, Stanley Cup and now the Spengler Cup. I'm going to go out on a limb and say he's the only Quadruple Gold Member to win the Spengler Cup as well.

4 points in Spengler Cup-winning game
2 goals (including GWG) in Stanley Cup-winning game
Led the entire 2005 WJC tourney with 5g, 8a in 6 games (ahead of Getzlaf, Ovechkin, Malkin, Crosby, and Carter) en route to gold; goal and assist in championship game
6g, 8a in 9 games in losing cause in '06 WC

Aside from being used sparingly in the '04 WC and '10 Olympics, he's been the biggest of big game players.

Thanks for updating this thread; it was a great read. I never followed the Spengler Cup before, but its seems like a cool tournament. Its interesting how Canada and Davos seem to dominate the tournament; over even the past 20 or so years.

It was excellent hockey, clean, fast and hard hitting without any foolishness. Every year, it provides great hockey over the Christmas holidays. Can you in the U.S. watch any of the games? I think ATDHE made streams available. The line of Bergeron, Seguin and Smyth was dominating.

TSN interviewed the President of the tournament and he mentioned they would like to invite an AHL team next year. He said that four U.S. based teams have already expressed interest.

FYI, this is the oldest invitational hockey tournament in the world.

EDIT: Sadly, the tournament gets no coverage in the States.

In a country where NCIS reruns outrate game 7 of the SCF, I am not surprised.

If only he had won the Memorial Cup, he might be compared to ,Scott Niedermayer. He is the only player to win every major North American and international championship in his career; he has won the Memorial Cup, the World Junior Championship, the IIHF World Championship, 2 Olympic Golds, 4 Stanley Cups and a World Cup. He never competed in the Spengler Cup but the World Cup win was best on best therefore more important than the Spengler. Plus the Memorial Cup is perhaps the most important club team chaampionship that a Canadian can win except for the Stanley Cup. Bergeron has never had the opportunity to win a World Cup. The last one being played in 2004 with Canada defeating Finland in the final.
