Does anyone remember Rafael Belliard? He began his pro career as an 18-year-old shortstop in 1980 with 43 PA in the rookie GCL (.233/.238/.471) and 26 PA in the SAL (.154/.125/.279). In spite of those stellar numbers, he was promoted to the Carolina League in 1981. I saw him play many times that season because the franchise was in the same town where I lived and I recall thinking that his was the worst swing I had ever seen from a professional player (519 PA, .364/.250/.514). He did have a glove, though.

He was called up by the Pirates for a cup of coffee the next year and to my amazement began a 17-year ML career. He actually didn't come up to stay until 1986 and even then was just a part-time player compiling a line of .270/.259/.530 with 2 HR in 2524 PA...mainly SS, but some 2B and a little 3B.

Now, there is a long time separating Belliard and Iglesias but they are intertwined in my mind. Based on an old recollection of Belliard, Iglesias looks a little better at the plate and a bit flashier in the field but given the atmosphere today of rating players I would be even more amazed to see Iglesias have a career of length similar to Belliard's than I was to see Belliard have it.

Belliard's swing got better but the results from it did not; his best season at the plate was probably with the Braves in 1991 when he posted a line of .296/.286/.582.

The signing is now official. He'll wear his brother's old #7, which I'm sure will only inspire more cat calls from the J.D. haters. Good. Fuck them.

He takes the lone roster vacancy created by the Hanrahan trade, which fills up the 40-man once again with Napoli still unsigned.

This is what JD had to say about Stephen taking his old number:

John Tomase@jtomase

"Go in there, tell Pookie you want No. 7," J.D. said. "Go in there, get No. 7, show 'em who you are. Stick up for the family. I’m a Drew."

I kind of want to go buy a Drew #7 t-shirt now.

Wow. JD's said more defending/ pumping up his brother this offseason than he did about himself in five years here. Pretty cool.

I'm glad that I already have one. Any chance of David Ross taking Cody Ross' number?

Well Cody Ross also wore #7 so I doubt it.

We could just have them switch off. Or, have them both wear it (Like they all wore Pesky's number.)

Or I could just admit my stupidity and exit stage left.

Eh, don't think one can be blamed for not paying attention last season. Only reason I even noticed was how it's passed through RFers for a long time, from Nixon to Drew to Ross.

They could have 7(base10), 7(base11), and so on.

7 has the same value in bases 10 and 11 (and every other integer greater than or equal to 8).

But you knew that already, right?

I think I probably knew that but they could include the base in small numbers.
