Thanks for the catch Donte. Enjoy the IR.

I hope BB handles the return-IR slot better next season.

Shiancoe made Mallet's trade value go down.

Must mean Branch is healthy and will replace Stallworth. Wonder what this means for Gronkowski, however.

Gaffney is facing a suspension, he won't be signed.

If they were just going to replace Stallworth with Branch, what's the need for IR? Are they being generous or something?

Stallworth reportedly hurt his ankle on the touchdown catch.

Apparently Stallworth suffered an ankle injury during the 63 yard td, that was his last snap of the game

Stallworth got hurt when he was tackled on his TD catch. There was a shot of trainers working on his ankle on the sidelines afterwards, so it's not a work.

I looked this up: Games not played as a FA count towards suspension. Jabar could play Sunday.

While I'd want Gaffney, it's probably Branch.

Too bad Shiancoe didn't work out, but fwiw - absent Edelman, a Welker/Lloyd/Branch WR group with Hernandez and Gronk (if not now, soon) is plenty to keep the passing game rolling...

Too bad, Stallworth seemed to still have some burst something Branch hasn't had for a couple years now. Could have been a factor down the stretch.

If his role was to run deep outs and catch perfect passes against man coverage (which Brady won't see again), I don't think he's irreplaceable. He dropped the first one that Brady dropped straight into his hands, too.

NFL Network reported that Gronk is unlikely to return this week, so not sure what the Shiancoe spot is for.

They don't, but dropping a TE (from the active roster pool) may suggest that a TE will be "added" to that pool.

Shiancoe's release MUST mean that either Gronk is coming back for the SF game or that they're signing another TE. There's no TE on the practice squad. I don't think there's any way they go into the weekend with only 3 TE's available to them.

Reports are that he's chomping at the bit to play and might be ready. Many feel that they team will still hold him out until week 17 and even then, just play him enough to knock the rust off. My feeling is that he may play this week, sit next week then play sparingly in week 17.

Go balls out to basically secure a bye

What reports? As of two days ago he was still in a cast. Playing him before he is 100%, or the playoffs, is craziness.

Probably only a tiny, tiny chance of this, but, he seems to play well in shortened seasons:

Gerard Warren?

Shot in the dark. Probably be a Brace IR to bring him back.

Or, one of Talib/Dennard/Arrington will be out for a stretch and they need another DB.

Since he was a street FA he obviously isn't a huge loss but he is being replaced by a decidedly slower albeit much better route running street FA. I just would have liked to see if Stallworth had anything left in the tank. He could have been useful for when a team opts to flood the short/middle zones ala NYJ and force Brady to beat teams deep.

I've been wondering about this - to what extent is there a re-injury/exacerbation risk with this type of injury?

A broken forearm is a broken forearm. If it hasn't yet healed fully, and putting too much pressure on it more easily cause another break? Or are we just looking at Gronk with a brace being less dexterous in catching the ball and less forceful in blocking until he's 100% again and the brace is off?

it seems the news is initially good on the CBs -- Talib "should" be ready per reports, Arrington apparently is okay, and there's this on Dennard

Mike Reiss on ESPN radio this morning said verbatim, "Gronk is champing at the bit to play" to describe the situation. But then said the training staff is really trying to hold him back to make sure he's 100% healthy.

Shot in the dark, but Ballard was PUP'd, not IR'd, right? Meaning he could, in theory, return at any time? I seem to recall at the time hearing that a 2012 was very unlikely, but not completely impossible. But I haven't heard a peep about him since.

No, Ballard is done for good this year. That fate was cemented a couple of weeks ago.

Players on the PUP must be activated by Week 10, or they are automatically moved to the IR.

I'm tired of the attrition, and regular season's end cannot get here fast enough for me. So it's Branch and, if necessary, Gaffney behind him? Might as well start lining them up now.

My guess is that it's Branch plus a second WR. They're very light on WR, and if the 49er game is more of a 3WR game, they'll want 4 non-Slater WRs on the roster.

By using the IR designation on a terrible player.

Who would they have used it on instead? The player can't come back for 8 weeks, so not on Gronkowski or Edelman. Unlikely they would've used it on Hernandez, considering he only missed 3 weeks before coming back for the Seattle game.

Demps was an undrafted rookie. There's no way they're using the IR-Return designation on him in the first week.

Here's the big question underlying all this: Why can they only return one player per season from the IR?

Because that's what the new CBA says you can do.

It's also worth looking at the players that have been waived over the year as potential IR/return tag beneficiaries over Shiancoe. Maybe they could have used it on Salas instead?

Also as an FYI, the 'designated to return' is a minimum of six weeks off the active roster, not eight as someone stated earlier.

Thank you for the literal interpretation of my question. Why does the CBA limit it to 1?
