Isn't it safe to say Farrell had input in this? He just coached Escobar in TOR firsthand so presumably knows his game on and off the field. I'd doubt the Sox pull a Jets and Tebow their manager. And he is being surrounded by purported character guys in the Sox clubhouse if he was signed.
If this was another sport and another team - say, the NFL and the Patriots - the meme would be "something something Belichick something Patriot Way" and no one would be concerned.
And if Iglesias isn't ready, then for a reasonable deal, Escobar is the training wheels to the future, with a slightly better MLB bat.

Totally agree with this sentiment. Patriots made this type of move with Dillon and Moss without much concern. Clubhouse environment was considered so strong that one questionable personality would be put in their place. Not sure if the Sox have established a comparable clubhouse atmosphere just yet but by all accounts Gomes, Napoli, and Victorino along with Ortiz should be a good foundation.
Also, its not just Farrell that has first hand experience, both Louvello and Butterfield coached in Toronto last year. Gotta figure they know more about him than the average fan. Escobar is signed for $5M in 2013 and then has $5M team options for both 2014 & 2015. If he straightens his act out then you have a good piece in place until Bogarts arrival and if he doesn't you move on with minimal cost.
Wouldn't an Aceves for Escobar trade make sense, as they would also be ridding themselves of any lingering Aceves issues.

The Giants and second baseman Marco Scutaro are in agreement on a three-year, $20MM deal, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
Adding: Scuts has never had a three year deal. 37 years old seems like a bad time to start.

Danny Knobler says he expects Escobar to be traded soon and Rays are the favorites.

Good.
If the Sox pursue a shortstop via trade I'd rather it be Asdrubal Cabrera, but signing Drew remains my preferred route.

But that's all okay, because surely no Red Sox players are assholes.
